I'm a teacher and it's that time of the year...culture week! Apart from the obvious (Apartheid, Mandela, Rugby, etc.), what are some other interesting topics I can put on the list for next week? Keep in mind that the students don't speak English very well and hardly ever heard of South Africa.

Does egypt have a usual race combination of couples? It seems as if it's mostly egyptians combining w/ westerners. I have yet to see an egyptian mix with a chinese, japanese, south american, cuban/puerto rican. In egypt it's just egyptians mixing w/ egyptians, it's not bad. Perhaps it's due to travel restrictions? Why is egypt so homogenous? Also, my egytpian husband informed me there are chinese male prisoners/dissidents sent from china to an area in cairo--has the male chinese community began to racially intermix w/ the female egyptians yet (in terms of creating a family)?

I have been to egypt as a spouse of an alexandrian and I noticed that most of the ppl. I met seemed to have to get beyond their apprehension of common beliefs that american women are sluts. People often label us to their beloved egyptian man that we make bad wives and have ingrained in their heads that we're "loose." If american culture is so "bad", why is Egypt adopting the music, sneakers, hip hop attire, etc., etc. and looking down upon americans w/ condescension who come to egypt w/ an open mind. The same things like affairs, people having premarital sex happen there. It's just not as obvious, but it happens. So why pretend that it does not? Not that you must accept it, but not treat those with an attitude of, "i'm holier than you." You don't know me yet, so don't label me until you do. It seems as if americanized muslims are more willing to take someone for who they are rather than treat them as if they're going to spread some sort of disease when first meeting them.

My husband is from alexandria and I'm wondering if it is just that area of egypt that ppl. tend to be this way (yes, I know that not everyone is the same, but there are trends. For example, the ppl. in the southern part of the the u.s.a. or the midwest have a less hurried lifestyle than californians like me):

when something important such as paperwork for the immigration process for schooling needs to be worked on by the egyptian who "really wants to come to america" because they complain of life in egypt going nowhere, they don't do much about it other than talk about it. Talk does not cook rice and patience of those willing to help is not eternal.

My husband explained to me that there is a lot of mental depression egypt and that people are accoustumed to government offices doing paperwork in egypt taking forever, they are stuck in their current lifes position forever and the economic situation for those who aren't government officials or policemen isn't as convenient as U.S.

Another fun question. No need to argue. Any 10 will do. Even if you think Zuma is great! Best answer goes to the one that can tell me why they are so great. Keep it real you beautiful people of the Rainbow Nation!

I'm going to Mauritius next month and am arriving at SSR International Airport and need to get to Le Morne [Pointe Sud Ouest] - specifically the Indian Hotel. How much should I be paying for a taxi to get to Le Morne.I ask as I always seem to get badly ripped off by taxi drivers when I go abroad

Secondly is the bus network in Mauritius good. i don;t feel brave enough to hire a car whilst there, and I will want to get from Le Morne to places like Flic en Flac, Black River Gorges National Park, Pamplemousse and over to the east coast to visit Ile aux cerfs...

Finally what currency should I take to Mauritius... Rupees, US Dollars, US travellers cheques.. I read somewhere that you can't take more than 700 rupees into the country?
Thanks!

It's interesting to read people attributing the rampant crime in what used to be South Africa to poverty, unemployment, apartheid - the usual suspects.
The real reason is the corrupt, uncaring ANC government, and by extension, the equally corrupt, inept so-called police force.
