i have 4 days to spend in cairo and surrounding area, i know its not long so can anyone give me some advice about cheap places to stay and if i should book bus, train, felluca from UK or wait till i get to cairo? any tips for the good bits to see so we dont waste time going places that are not really that great. want to try and cover off the main and attractions and at least do some kind of cruise (even if just for dinner).

The museum Yes. Depends on your tastes and interests it is easy to spend a couple of days in the museum. It is overloaded and can be intimidating. The Pyramids and the Sphinx. But also behind one of the pyramids is an ugly elongated cement cylinder building. Inside this horror is the "Sun Boat" The oldest ship in existence 5000 years old in almost mint condition. It is awesome. The Citadel is worth it. Also find a way to the necropolis of Cairo. There is a Mosque that has the largest wooden dome in the world all sculptured. Do the Nile with a feluca. and in your free time browse the Khan El Khalili. May be 4 days is not enough

I would only go to the museum if it is raining! The "Scarabee" boat does a wonderful lunch and you are on the Nile for about 2hrs - this leaves from the Corniche just opposite the Nile Hilton, then of course the Pyramids, The Citadel and the Khan el Khalli which is a great bazaar and you must have at least one meal at Felfella which is an amazing cheap and brill place - that is just off the Kasr Laine but ask anyone, it is famous with the locals. I have been to Cairo 8 times and love it to bits. I think you will need more than 4 days as you can just walk and walk and soak up the atmosphere

4 days are hardly enugh time to see only cairo, so i wouldn't plane on going anywhere else. that means you don't have to order anything in advance.
as anyone else said: the museum and the pyramids are a must. the pyramids are just out side cairo, you get there with a cab. anywhere else - take the metro, it's cheap and good.
the bazzar in khan el-khalili is highly recomended, especialy in the evenings. the citadel is worth seeing, and if you still have time - the old, cristian part of the city is beautifull.
cairo is over-welming... and great. enjoy!

GO TO THE MUSEUM FIRST THING WHEN IT OPENS TO GET TO THE MASK ROOM BEFORE THE QUEUES
GO TO THE CITADEL AS THIS WAS BUILT FROM THE FACE STONE OF THE PYRAMIDS. THE PYRAMIDS AND SPINX'S ARE UNBELIEVABLE TAKE YOUR TIME
