Hi Thomas,
DXB airport is very large. Sometimes, dependant on who you are flying with and where the aircraft parks, it can be an hour to an hour and a half before you deplane and the bus takes you to your arrival gate (note, not ALL aircraft park off stand, but a fair few do .. especially the Emirates ones from the UK that arrive around midnight). With the gate for your onward flight opening one-one and a half hours before departure, you'll probably find you will not have as much 'spare' time as you think. However, should you wish, contrary to an earlier post where someone mentioned 'you can pay to go into the Emirates Business Class Lounge' .. note this is not true (I work for Emirates and can confirm this) .. there is, however, a Marhaba Lounge which you can pay a nominal fee to enter (I think AED 85) and then you will have access to free drinks/snacks etc. whilst you wait .. you can even be checked in for your onward flight etc. Contrary to some beliefs, DXB is not a 'dry' airport and alcohol is available in certain places. Alternatively, there is a food court with a McDonalds, Indian, Pizza Place etc. or you can walk (internally) to the Irish Village which is a great atmosphere and again you can avail of a few beers before you go onwards (make sure you don't enjoy yourself too much and miss your connection!!). You do have time to leave the airport and do some shopping .. be advised that the Duty Free at DXB is expensive and shopping in the city itself, even for perfume etc. is much cheaper. If you are a UK national, you don't need a visa to enter the UAE, you can get a visit visa on arrival for up to 60 days. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Enjoy Dubai .. it's great (and v.v.v. hot right now!!)

Dubai International Airport (IATA: DXB, ICAO: OMDB) is a major air facility in Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates.
The airport is a hub to Dubai's international airline, Emirates.
Because of the many stores in the airport, it is considered a major place to buy duty free goods in that country, which is in turn considered a duty free shopping heaven, by many. Prices actually are higher than in many other airports.
In 2005, the airport served 24.7 million passengers. You have a million things to do once you are there..

oh trust me you will NOT AT ALL be bored. it will be absolutely wonderful. the airport has shops galore...from designer clothing to arabic trinkets. there are also themed lounges (chinese, thai, indian, arabic, french) its great. i'm grew up in dubai and am an emirati muslim woman and i just LOVE IT! i may even move back there...its heavenly. if you get a chance to go to the city you should go to: Deira shopping mall, Burj al arab (i stay there all the time it is wonderful even if u arent staying the night u should go to the restaurant) and also jumeirah beach area, the grand mosque, downtown dubai and also watch the dhows sail by in the creek. trust me you'll love it i suggest stoppign there for a few days.

Grab a taxi, ask to go to the City Centre shopping Mall. It's bl**dy great! You can eat there too and buy lots of cheap electrics.
OR
Pay to go into the Emirates Business Lounge at DXB. Its worth every penny. Food and drink exceptional and very plush surroundings. You can also take a shower etc to freshen up
Have a good time

You can spend the time easily in the airport. You can also get a cab and go to the market. It is now Ramadan for them so respect their culture. Read up on Ramadan before you go. Have a great time.
Excellent answer Sam's Mom! My vote for best answer.

I didn't like that airport at all, it was very gaudy and expensive. Find a good seat and get some shut eye that's what I recommend. I did two stopovers there but luckily for me I wasn't there for six hours.
