Ok I watch pro hockey once in a while when I have time and enjoy it - I understand the basics of the game and the rules, I even go to friends hockey games and I worked in a sports store once upon a time selling gear to kids and rec players.

But I don't know who any of the NHL players are except a couple of Leafs (local team) - where can I get the basics on the NHL so I don't look like an idiot when talking to a fan or going to a game with a client.

What basics can you tell me? Who are this years teams to watch? Is there anyone or team that has come out of teh blue or just sucks for no reason??

There are 6-million people in Greater Toronto; it's the fourth-largest market in North America and has the BIGGEST hockey fan-base on Earth. ... Yet we only have one team. Seriously, you could probably put two more NHL clubs in the GTA and they'd sell out every game. Stick a club in North York .... put another one in Etobicoke or in Mississauga .... why the hell not???? It would be a cash cow.

I have come to the realization that the regular season OT/SO system sets teams up for failure come playoff time. It happend last year with the stars who had an inflated record becasue of the shootout and in the regular season OT is 4-4 not 5-5. So far this year for Buffallo 11 of the 35 wins are non regulation wins, in the playoffs it will be interesting to see what happens to them.

I recently broke my Easton Synergy Si-core and I was wondering which hockey stick would be best for me. I am interested in a Nike Bauer XXX-Lite and an Easton Synergy CNT. I dont take a lot of slap shots but i do like to roof it and stickhandling is a big part of my game. Thank you I appreiciate your help.

We're now entering the home stretch of the NHL season. It's usually about this time of year that the league gets divided into 3 categories:
1. Teams with a legitimate shot at winning it all,
2. Teams with only a shot at making the playoffs, and
3. Teams that are truly bad.

So, my question is, who are the 2, 3, or 4 teams from each conference with realistic aspirations of winning it all.

For me:
East - Buffalo, New Jersey, Ottawa, and Atlanta (in that order)
West - Nashville, San Jose, Detroit, Anaheim
