I have come to the realization that the regular season OT/SO system sets teams up for failure come playoff time. It happend last year with the stars who had an inflated record becasue of the shootout and in the regular season OT is 4-4 not 5-5. So far this year for Buffallo 11 of the 35 wins are non regulation wins, in the playoffs it will be interesting to see what happens to them.

For the people that say "a win is a win" and "if they are doing it now they can keep doing it later in the season" I am not contesting they are doing well in the regular season. What I am saying is that the new regular season creates a false record for the playoffs. Because come playoff time there is no SO and OT isnt 4 on 4. The game is much different come playoff time and when nearly 1/3 of your wins would not count in the playoffs that seems to me like it is missleading.

i don't think this year's sabres compare to last year's stars. they are a much stronger team and do not have to rely on ot success to squeak into the playoffs. their problem is depth on d and in the playoffs, especially if they find themselves in ot games 5 on 5, that will be their test.

the notion that the point system is an inaccurate measuring stick of a team's strength is valid, though. a better team might miss the playoffs bc a weaker team with a couple of excellent penalty shot specialists may sneak past them in the standings. i used to think that maybe a regulation win should count for 3 or that an ot win should only count for 1 and an ot loss should count for zero but now, i'm not so sure.

it used to be that a losing team in one conference might get the last seed while a winning one from the other would be out and this year a Northwest team is going to get a 3 seed with a farworse record than both the 4th and 5th seeds. my point is that whatever you do, there will be inequities here and there. the system as it is now, though, has allowed for 27 of 30 teams to still be in contention for the playoffs (only philly, la, and chicago are too far out) this late in the season. in the states, the nhl relies on ticket sales for revenue due to lack of a good tv deal. having so many teams still in the hunt this late is a very good thing for the game and so, the point system shouldn't be tweaked.

it might be nice, though to make the ot 10 minutes i/o 5.

What a crock! So what you're saying is 24 of the Sabres' 35 wins ARE from regulation? Then it seems to me they're getting the job done. Add that to the fact that they've got the most goals in the entire the league (202 GF as of 54 games played.) They're AVERAGING 3.7 goals per game, and have 4 players in the top 30 scorers, more then any other team out there. 25 wins in regulation, and 11 in OT/SO? Looks to me like the Sabres are winning the blowouts AND the close ones. Take a look at thier losses as well. Most of them are 1 point games. This constant talk by critics and fans from other teams that the Sabres will burn out, or that thier record is somehow inflated is just a bunch of bunk. The stats continue to show the Sabres are (mostly) playing great hockey. Stop trying to keep the small market teams down and give credit where credit is due! Buffalo has built a great team. And they did it without having to play up to any prima donas and without blowing millions on players that can't produce.

Well, this year's team is set up a little better than last year's team. The only reason last year was a problem is Carolina didn't play the Sabres defensemen in Game 7, they played the Rochester Amerks. But, the real thing is that you look at OT/SO, when all you should look at is SO wins.

Nashville is the team that has to prove itself in the playoffs to see if it is for real.

No team in NHL history with a win record like the Sabres has ever won a Cup. The last team to do so was the '93 Leafs and the closest they got to was the Conference Finals. If memory serves me right, I think they lost to Gretzky's Kings in Game 7.

And Buffalo will choke harder than a $2 hooker.
