As of today's victory against Colorado, there are 29 games left in the Oilers' regular season. Most hockey nuts are thinking that 94 points will be the cut-off number for a #8 spot in the playoffs -- therefore, with 56 points in 53 games, the Oilers need to achieve another 38 points in 29 games. That's going to be tough considering the defensive woes that Edmonton has suffered from all year following the departure of Chris Pronger. Given the average of 1.06 points per game this year, that puts the Oilers at 87 points in 82 games if they don't increase their W/L/OTL percentages -- 7 points shy of the 8th seat.

So basically there's only room for 9 regulation-time losses in the rest of the entire season, and even less if we're looking at some OTLs. I have the feeling that the Oilers will have another end-of-the-season scratch-for-the-playoff-slot nailbiter like last year, especially given that most of the final games are against NorthWest Division rivals.

At this point, I would think the real question needs to be: do we want this team in the playoffs as is (and probably not go far against the Ducks or Nashville), or do we need to think about becoming sellers now to set up for a playoff run next year?

We hope they will make the playoffs. Almost a miracle last year when they came within one game of wining the Stanely Cup against Carolina.

Update - Oilers beat Colorado today 3 - 2.

Honestly? I doubt it. I love them and all, but it's a struggle being an Oilers fan, especially when you live in Vancouver like me :( I have no support!

GO OILERS GO!!

I sure hope so, but it doesn't look that likely. They have been struggling all year to find the offensive breakout speed that really makes them exciting to watch, and they aren't winning the divisional games that are becoming super important right now. Add to that the fact that they don't currently have a playoff caliber defense, and it's not looking that promising
