My 19 yo boyfriend used to be an Atheist. However, after being w/ me for a year -- of his own decision + findings -- he has (been?) chosen to be Pagan.

The thing is, he lives with a very Catholic Hispanic family. They're not too swift of him having been Atheist, and they want him to try to be Catholic again, for 6 months. He started being Atheist when he was around 15.

He's continuously getting signs to switch to Kemeticism (Egyptian Paganism) from flipping thru channels and finding things about Egypt, to looking for books and finding Egyptian History books for cheap, and lots of other things.

He agrees he wants to be Pagan... but his mom said "brujeria" (Spanish for witchcraft) is evil.

What should he do? Should he just hold out til he moves out? Should he tell his parents what he believes?

I think he should tell his parents, because I know if I was them I wouldn't want to have been lied to the entire time.

He doesn't want to be Christian, so don't suggest it please.

I see people say "Oh those atheists, of course they don't *really* believe that my god doesn't exist - they just deny it so they can carry on with their wicked lives"... or something along those lines... I find it amusing in a way, and rather sad, that they can't accept that their religious mythology is rejected by others.

Why are they in denial?

A person born in the Bible belt is likely to grow up as a Christian whereas someone raised in the Middle East will probably be a Muslim.

You know, death, disease, handicaps, Jehovas Witnesses. Who the hell prayed for us to have those. If he creates everything, why can't he create a good world?

do you believe in faith, in a personal realtionship with god?

do you prefer the rigorous peer scrutiny that the scientific method provides for?

are you mostly just trying to be a good human being or citizen? do organized religions or religious authorities 'do it' for you?

if it ever came down to it, do you feel strongly enough about your 'beliefs' that you could give your life for your belief?

if you couldn't, would you stand by while others were asked to, and remain silent. would you feel compelled to speak out, one way or the other?

so five sentences is pretty rediculous, right?

Well I surely KNOW that he DOES exists. I can feel His presence, and I, many times, witnessed His actions with my own eyes.

Is there any scientific evidence that He doesn't exist???

It is assumed that you can "accept" Jesus into your heart, and that by doing thing you invoke a thing refered to universally as grace. I contest this, I say it is the works themselves that show your adherence to what Christ taught, and through this you show your acceptance of his teachings. The grace is in the works, that is how you demonstrate your understanding of Christ's sacrifice. Or are you telling me that Jesus accepts lip-service?

Brilliant scientist Kurzweil in his last 2 books( cf. the Singularity : When Humans Transcend Biology ) predicts that in 2 decades man will be able to extend human life indefinitely.
Since the fire and brimstone will be dimmed greatly in the human psyche, is it probable that these myths can survive without the threat of damnation?
What use is salvation when death can be eliminated? Certainly the social cohesion obtained via fear weakens. How can each successive generation of nano-enhanced theists NOT become more distanced from hellish themes?

Ok peeps, from the other question I asked b4, if God has a plan 4 each of us, then wats the point in living if its already set an he already knows were we r going 2 end up wen we DiE. I mean, people say that freewill is being threatend by this, does that mean we dont really have it becuz he already thought up things 4 ur 2 think an act an such already becuz he already planned everything out?
And if its our choice in wat we do wit our lives wether we want 2 live by the bible or not, y do people hate other religions if all the 'Good' people who live by the bible think differently about others? Like people from 1 religion doubt other religions becuz we all think different. Did God want us 2 come up wit this many religions in life?
An wats up wit the recarnation thing? If we r recarnated in the next life, y live this life if ur going 2 live another life, meaning that ur no longer Unique becuz u were already here an this is ur second trip back?
Answer all or 1 or watever. Thank u :)

Muhammad's conduct includes:

Commanded war parties to killing of enemy;
Married a nine year old when he was fifty-three;
Ethnically cleansed all jews from the Arabian pennisula;
Owned many slaves till his death;
Married many woman.

In Islam, these acts are deemed example of perfect behavior becaise the Quran declares that all of Muhammad's behavior was perfect and set the standard for all humans to follow for all time.

However, today, only Islamic culture upholds these behaviors as virtuous.

Is this relative?

Why are the rates of teenage pregnancy and abortion considerably greater in the highly religious US than in much more secular countries of Western Europe?

e.g:

Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany and Spain: Less than 1%
UK: 2 - 3%
USA: 5.5%

I believe it's also true to say that the US has a higher proportion of its population in prison than any other country in the world, but I haven't found the figures to substantiate that.

Is there a connection between prevalence of religious belief and all these social ills, and if so what is it?
