I am, in fact, atheist. I have seen so many derogatory comments towards atheists on this site, that I wanted to see what people thought. I'm surprised to see how many people automatically assumed I believed in a god, and how many negative ratings I got for this question. I am, however, pleased to see that the answers so far have been unanimous.

absolutely. I can't think of a single reason that they would not be worthy of respect just for being Atheists.

Atheists deserve respect for using their minds and sticking with an unpopular opinion, because it is what they truly believe in. There's nothing wrong with that.

Atheists deserve the same amount of respect as everyone else. They're humans like the rest, just with a different belief system which is not wrong by any means. If you give respect, you should be able earn it in return.

Every son of Adam is worthy of respect and atheists worship a God one way or another.

I once met a guy who said he was atheist but he went on to boasting about this tape that he walked around with on a walkman in which an expert lectured on gaining self-respect and how that made him fearless of any animal but fearful of man.

I had to inform him that the lecturer was his God that he worshipped and that man should not be feared.

I think atheists really do not believe in Churches and fail to understand that the God that you worship may be your own lusts, and so they think they dont believe in a God and allow other people to convince them that if they dont follow the trend of Church-worship, then they are atheists.

I respect human beings because I think I understand human weakness and a misunderstanding of God and worship is indeed a human failing.

My advice to you is that you re-think your position and do not depend on others to make your decisions for you. Start afresh, and put aside what your parents and others may have taught you and make a man of yourself.

Try to understand too that many people follow blindly and never examine their own self-declared faith and may well be worshipping false Gods and be in a worse position than those who think they are atheists, for instance, how can one seriously believe the One God is Three Gods in a Trinity, or that One God has a son?

One means One, or the Only, or Singular, and this must mean that there is None like the One, therefore sonship or trinity must be impossible because the Oneness will be lost and comes down to nonsense and ignorance.

I had a friend who used to refer to people's ignorance as "playing smart with stupidness".

What makes an Atheist any different than any other person? If it is because they do not believe in God like you do, maybe they just haven't found their own spirituality yet... and when or if they do why would it change who they are as a person, which is what makes someone worthy of respect in itself.

i don't think it matters what religion you are, people should be respected or not resected for the actions they take. sure, if you join a cult where you have a ritual of sacrificing people or something, you shouldn't really expect respect. but if you are a good person who happens to not believe in god, i would respect you a lot more than an a$$hole who does believe.

As an atheist, I tend not to go through life worrying about whether I'm "worthy" of someone's respect.

I respect everyone until they give me a good reason not to. Belief system does not even come into play with that because that is merely one small part of whom a person is. I choose not to think of individuals as 'labels'.

Yes, that because :
1. They are humans like you, But they dont just believe something that written
2. They are created by your God (in your concepts)
3. They have the potential become God Follower, You can convert them, if they want.
4. Human Rights

It is weird that God let the Christians and Atheis get into conflict and let the Christian battle themselve withhout reinforcement of angels. He is almighty right? So why does He just waiting and see us fight each other. Just show Himself or his angels to the publics and there will be so many atheist believe in Him and could be saved(in your concepts).

Sure. If an atheist does something respectable, like saving a life or something, they should be respected. Just because they are atheists, that doesn't mean they don't deserve respect.

All people are worthy of respect because they are human beings. Atheists are respectful because they do their own research and think for themselves. They draw their conclusions based on logic and personal experience. Many are also advocates for humanitarian causes.
