Someone sent me an e-mail thanking me for the gift to his new born. But I'm not sure what reply is appropriate since I don't know him that well. By the way, we are not very close.

We are working on writing essays in English class. The topic is: Describe an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

Here is the essay:

The wind rushed past me and the smell of falafel floated up to the heavens. The brightly lit stores beckoned to us with hearty tunes and offers of the lowest prices of the season. The sounds of laughter tinkled like glass in the air. No, this was no another weekend spent in New York City as many my assume. In fact, this was one of the many days spent on the Boardwalk in Alexandria, Egypt.
My trip to Egypt for a second summer was an experience unlike any other. The customs there are very different from those of Americans. For instance, when my family and I would visit my aunt, it was a natural, if not necessary, thing to kiss her on both cheeks. The affections Egyptians show towards each other differs from the stand-offish manner between, for example, parents and teenage children. Here in America, very few teenagers would rather be locked up in detention with their most hated teacher than be caught dead kissing their parents on the cheek. This is proof that family values are emphasized more in some cultures than they are in others.
In addition to learning about different family values, I learned about social dos and don’ts. For instance, in Egypt a girl that had a conversation with any guy that was not a relative was frowned upon. In contrast, here in America if a girl was seen talking to a guy, it would be completely normal. Now although humans are adaptable to different environments, it took me quite a while to adjust to this social policy. Even when I did attempt to abide by this social guideline, I found it almost impossible because it was just more natural for me to just talk to guys. Of course, one slip of the tongue and I was seen as a wayward girl. As challenging as it was, in due course I learned to bite my tongue and receive the respected glances of adults and peers.
Finally, even something as important as education differs in Egypt than it does in America. For instance, high school lasts for only three years in Egypt. Now although that may sound like a dream come true to many American students, it is a nightmare for students in Egypt. High school becomes more competitive than it does here and the students feel the pressure from parents, teachers, and society. They scramble for high grades in three short years and pray that their hard work will pay off in the end. Unlike here in America, their grades in high school are the one thing they can rely on to get them into colleges.
This experience definitely opened my eyes to worldwide cultures. To think that I would have grown up in such a fascinating culture made my trip to Egypt all that more worthwhile. Gaining knowledge of the customs, social mannerisms, and even education was just an added bonus to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Such an experience helped me develop individually by opening my eyes to the varied ethnicities of the world. This is part of the reason I am anxious to delve into college and embrace the diverse individuals I will meet.

In society today sometimes its hard to go up to someone and just say something politely. People might say your mad, hawker etc.
Do you think the internet has made people less social in a way that it may give security that no one knows you but just closes you in a world of your own?
Interested to see opinions on this one

As an avid traveler, I get easily tired of hearing the utterly inaccurate stereotype that most all Americans are white... as in blonde, blue/green eyed, it's just not realistic. I'm Italian, Albanian and Native American and my family has been here for generations; I know VERY few Americans who are naturally blonde, light-eyed, can't keep a tan, and who aren't mixed with another race (such as Native American). How did this get started? And what do you see when you think of the US? I'm hoping this long-lived stereotype will fade so the world will see the real colors and heritage of the US.

I see so many responses to questions on here implying that we humans are inherently greedy, sinful or flawed in some way that trying to attain a better or different kind of society is a waste of time and energy. In the last few years our attitudes to the place of women in Western culture has been changing radically. Is that not an example of a change in "human nature"? The same can be argued for racist attitudes. What do you think?

European Police in uniform where the same uniform.
In the US there seem to be so many types of uniform.

I get the impression that anyone can walk around in the US with a police jacket on they were given from uncle Bob !!

I know you are going to tell me its illegal to impersonate a Police Officer.

If uniforms were uniformed would it be better for all ?

As you know in Europe, each countries Police generaly have one uniform that everyone recognises where ever you live.

Ps: Your female cops in uniform are babes ! Well the ones I have seen..

Is it just me or does anyone else find it distasteful that the execution of Sadam has made top headlines over our OWN former President's passing away? I find this rude and it really shows where the American interest lies. I think we owe some respect to those who have led our great country before us. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Just want to see if anyone ever was as embarrassed as I was once. If you really want a laugh or be grossed out, check this tidbit out: When I was 19, I drank all day with my buddy at the quarry, peeing outside all day of course. Made my way to a bus afterwards for 2 hour trip. There were a couple people on the bus, and I went to one of the back seats to dozed off. While dozing I stood up, said hi to the guy two seats in front of me (I thought I was still at the quarry and this guy was my friend), and peed on the floor. Woke up when the guy flashed his badge in my face, he was an off duty cop. Wow, how embarrassing :(

What makes a person feel like they are the center of everything? And what makes them feel like they must turn everything into a competition that they must come out as the winner of? I know a few people who I think feel that they have to one up everything that you say, think, or do. I don't understand it. Anyone have any insight as to what makes some people like this, while others are quite happy with things no matter how they may rank?

a) People who seem genuinely nice, but don't ask for anything in return
b) People who seem nice, but always ask for some favors or considerations later on, which are equal to the niceness they originally showed you
c) People who are not always very nice, but you can depend on them when you need help (always)
d) People who always ask for something from you, but never give you anything - either material or in the way of frendship
e) People who mind their own business, and don't offer or give any help, but also don't ask for any favors

I'm not asking who you like the most, but who you respect the most. If you could please rank the categories, beginning with the ones you respect the most first.

Yesterday I was browsing the bookstore and ran across a book about something, roughly '101 of the most inspirational characters that never lived.' The list ranged from Shylock to Mickey Mouse, Santa and the Wandering Jew. Number one was a big surprise to me: The Marlboro Man.
So, what about yourselves? What fictional character has shaped your life and why?
