It definitely is for the Attention that it gets them .. and some even WANT to irritate the OTHER drivers on the road ... Just a phase that young males go through when they are on the way to responsible adulthood.
when it begins to affect their hearing .. then they learn to turn the noise down ... and maturity goes a long way in learning how to respect others (not just on the highway, but in life).

Power, control, and being legal. Also, to get attention, feel the bass in a system where they probably installed themselves, or paid for it to be installed. They don't think it's cool, they know that it draws attention. Because when they didn't have a car, they heard someone else with a loud system and thought,"I got to get a car"! After wards the cycle continue on with TV screens, GPS, PS2 & 3 in the rides, etc. Consider a limo,,, all the luxuries in the world because your paid the price to rent the vehicle, so one wants their money's worth.

I figure that people do this because, once they're older, they don't want to hear anymore. While people who do this will come up with their reasons, I think that basically they're just plain rude. Their desire to hear loud music is pretty darn inconsiderate really; they just don't think or care about other people. The majority of people don't play their music loudly & somethings wrong when people subject us to music which is so loud that we can't hear our own music when we're playing it at a reasonable level.

i assume it is becuase they have little regard for cover, and beleive that the music that they offered or hear to on the radio is so unique and superb that all and sundry ought to right here it. truly there must be dB regulations in automobiles. it is a protection undertaking. I certainly have been stopped in heavy grid locked site visitors in basic terms to be hit by potential of a few jack *** attempting to back out of a parallel spot together with his music blasting. Had he have toned it down perhaps he could have been alerted to my presence by potential of the incessant honking of no longer in basic terms myself however the different 2 drivers of the vehicle he hit.

I'm not a guy, and I turn up my music really loud. I don't do it because I think it's cool, but because it makes me happy to hear loudly music I love. I don't know, it's instinct. If you hear a song you like, isn't your first instinct to reach for the volume button and turn it up?

You're right, they think if you can hear their irritating music you will check them out. . And you know how competitive men can be. There is some unspoken competition out there that the guy with the loudest radio wins. I guess when they're all 80 it will be the guy with the strongest hearing aid who will win that one.
Piece of advice guys.... We don't want to hear your music, it irritates us, please turn it down!!!! We don't think you're cool. We don't get turned on. We might talk to you, but only to get you to turn that crap off!!!!

It's possible they are unaware of how bass works, that they don't realise it is louder outside the car than inside. More importantly bass can travel much further than the rest of the music, making it sound stupid.

Because they are idiots and have no consideration for other road users. It is 90% of young drivers who cause the serious accidents on the roads.
