What makes a person feel like they are the center of everything? And what makes them feel like they must turn everything into a competition that they must come out as the winner of? I know a few people who I think feel that they have to one up everything that you say, think, or do. I don't understand it. Anyone have any insight as to what makes some people like this, while others are quite happy with things no matter how they may rank?

Society and bad parenting. Society tells us we have to be the best, prettiest, smartest, thinnest, etc. Also, parents who let their children be the center of the family raise children who grow up to believe they are the center of the world. TV is the worst. Look at all of the commercials. Look at the movie stars and athletes. It's surprising that we're all not that way. Just thank God everyday that you've got your bearings. All in all, if you really get to know these people, they are not only wasting their life instead of enjoying it, they are also not very happy with who they are, but instead consumed by what they are.

Self-centered people usually lack the gift of self-reflection. They can't look in the mirror and see how obnoxious they really are. And if they could take an honest look at themselves, they'd have to admit that they're highly insecure, thus the need to show the world they're better than everyone else. Could be the way someone was raised, or a personality flaw. Some of us are gifted with the ability to see how we are around others and can affect them. Unfortunately, most people today are so wrapped up in themselves, they choose to ignore (consciously or not) others around them. Probably why the world is in the shape it's in today...
