In the cartoon advertisements for Sea Monkeys — found in 1970s comic books next to ads for X-Ray Specs and trick soap that turned hands black , the creatures looked like a 1950s TV family.
The husband occasionally carried a briefcase and tousled the kelpy hair of his young son. The blond-haired wife cradled an infant. But both the ad's blatant and subliminal cues were clearly keyed to pre-pubescent boys. The Sea Monkeys were naked. The woman wore no wedding ring and crossed her long legs seductively. The husband and wife wore the smiles of swingers.
Just maybe, you thought, if you saved up your allowance, you could grow a woman. She might be part monkey and live underwater, but still...
