To the extent that the questioner attempts to point out modern Wiccan is more of an invention than a functional historical belief system, and perhaps that much of some Wiccan practices are New Age fabrication, the point is made. To the extent that the question seems hostile and invidious, it is not very well phrased.
The oldest religion still practiced in the world today pre-dates any of the Eastern belief systems, including Buddhism and Confucianism. this is Zoroastrianism, derived from the practices codified by the ancient Babylonians. If the questioner means this religion, then I recommend hurrying up - practitioners of Zorastrianism are dying out from natural causes as well as persecution. This religious system predates modern or historical Judaism.
Even those who today follow a "natural" religion passed down through European roots have a very difficult time connecting to the practices of the pre-Christian tribes of the Celts, Picts, Gaels, Iceni, Franks, Helvetii, Saxons, and northern peoples of Scandinavia. I do not believe anyone in a "pagan" belief system of any type at this time continues to sacrifice animals and people to Odin by hanging them from the boughs of a sacred oak tree, or take captives, pen them up in wicker baskets, hang them from a tree, and at an auspicious time burn them alive. Virtually the entire Graeco-Roman religious system is now either absorbed into Christianity or abandoned as serious religious practice. The goths and Visigoths, who certainly practiced this kind of "old" religion, became Christians en masse, and even if there were examples of "rustication," or pagan practices clinging to life afterward, it is impossible to say that today's descendants might possibly follow any authentic version of the old ways.
About the only European-based group in the world that today can make a solid claim to religious views and practices that date in an unbroken line from Classical and earlier eras are the Saami, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. Close behind them, but much altered by the passage of time and influences of Christianity are the Icelanders.
If we look about the world otherwise, there are many folk who practice traditional religions. These are found extensively among North American native peoples, in jungle regions of Brazil and parts of South America, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and especially the Indonesian archipelago. Additionally, almost all of Asia that has not been substantially converted to either Islam or Christianity holds to very old belief sysems. This is particularly true of the religions of the Indian sub-continent.
So there are lots of choices for the "real" old religion. What kind, where you will find reliable evidence and instruction, and so forth, depends on which one you choose. You just might NEED to go to a bookstore for historical and archaeological help.

Oooohh....someone thinks they have it all figured out. *round of applause* I hate to break it to you but you find the bible at Barnes and Noble too d*ckweed. The difference between real religion and "the made up stuff" is true faith. It doesn't matter what you believe, just that you believe. That is what keeps your soul safe. Not accepting some pushy, ignorant *ssh*le into your heart. Because **** still happens whether you believe in God or not. And if he is so forgiving then he wouldn't have a problem with us exerting the free will HE GAVE US, so why should you. Let me guess, you call yourself a Christian right? Do you go to church and read the bible too? Do you follow the ten commandments to the "t" or have you lied? have you wanted something that someone else had? Guess what that makes you human. same as the rest of us so get off your high horse and get your face in the sh*t with us and enjoy the life He gave you without preaching about lost souls because the final judgement is up to Him. Not you. So enjoy your blasphemy while it lasts and I'll see you in hell.

Oh I see, you hold the secrets to omnipotence and all knowledge? How dare you attempt toforce your anally retentive beliefs on anyone. What would the real religion be then? Any that you are able to choose don't predate the Pagans as all faith before Christianity was Pagan. Barnes and Noble may stock the type of books that you read but I get my kicks from handling primary sources rather than being indoctrinated by myths and the masses. Get a life.

Well, what religion would a Pagan be, then? Anything other than xtian, is what. It means 'someone who believes in something other than (xtian) god', not necessarily any religion either.
So now we've cleared that one up, what 'REAL ONE' are you on about? There IS no 'real' pagan religion, you uneducated fool.
I know you are referring to Wicca, it's just a shame(well, funny for us, thanks!) you failed to educate yourself to some basic facts first, LOL.
Did you not even think to try that lil' ol' link down there to Wikipedia? That little action would have saved you making such an idiot out of yourself!
Thanks again for the giggle!
he he he, Peace off!
BTW Lupin IV, seems you have much to learn along with your 'friend' the questioner. Crowley was of The Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn, nothing to do with Wicca...you can have that for free - the next one I charge for, ok?
;)
scottfamilytribe, you wanted a reply from the email you just sent. Well here it is, as your email isn't confirmed.
Well, for a start, yes I did know that Pagans(I'll add the 'some' for you)practiced human sacrifice; the Mayans for one, were a good example of that, but guess what? Not all who fail to follow abrahamic monotheistic religions practice human sacrifice!(shock! Horror!)
As to being an archaeologist, LOL you'll be the first one I have ever met who can't even spell their own job title!(archeologist, eh?)
Maybe, just maybe...if you study hard...you may become one when you grow up. I hope you trust in the fact I shall not be holding my breath for that though...

This is where I get nasty, well, not really I guess.
You want the reason? You want the real reason why I personally don't follow any religion? You have already answered it in your question. Religion, no matter which one, is nothing more than a glorified Nazi party. Constantly trying to sway the world with it's propaganda, seeing which religion can claim the most lives and deeper loyalty. Catholisism and Christianity being the worst... both religion send millions of missionaries to third world countries, and offer aid, but only if the locals agree to believe and worship your god. The idea of god has historically killed many more than it has saved. So **** you you god damn sheep. Follow blindly, and see how much it hurts when they lead you into a deep pit. And I assure you, you will not be able to crawl out of it.

First of all, pagan refers to anyone who doesn't follow christianity, so that is technically "everyone else besides christians" so-to-speak. Secondly, what do you define as the "real" religion. I would like to think that if a person has faith in something it would be significantly real to them and therefore their "real" religion. And thirdly, Barnes and Noble also carries Bibles, so aren't you implying that that book is made up as well? Be sure to word your questions more clearly so perhaps some of us "pagans" out there can give you a decent answer to your question.

I'm a Pagan. I'm not one of those new agers that read books from Barnes and noble. My family as been pagan for generations on both sides. My grandfather, on fathers side, was from Ireland and a Druid. On my mothers we had both Celtic and native American. All I know comes from them not books. I was lucky to have that. Most Pagans need books to help them because so many of our spiritual leaders were put to death in the burning times. In most cases so much was lost and it can not be recovered. Even those that are like me have huge chunks missing from the base information that it can not be recovered.
But don't Christians get their holy books from book stores or do the bibles just fall from the sky. All faiths have written text it is how we pass it on. The Christians luck out, no one set out to destroy their faith and try to wipe out all memory of it.

Ha-Ha! I love this question! There is no "Real one", Paganism is the most disorganized religion in history! We all have to develop our own moral codes and take full responsibility for our actions and even thoughts! This gives us a leg up on the christians, as they just get to give everything to their god to sort out, but hurts us too. I know more pagans with depression than christians. But to be fair to the bookstores, a good number of those books are actually helpful if you only take their basic idea and expand on it.

First of all, when you posted this did you ever think that you would anger a bunch of pagans, let alone people? So what is the "real" religion? Yours? What makes your religion so much better and so "right"? Cannot all religions be right? Maybe you should think this through, and when you come up with a REAL question, then ask, and you won't make a bunch of people mad.

The real "old time religion" was pretty well extirpated by centuries of Christian persecution, so modern pantheists have had to reinvent the religion. All religions are made up; they are our attempts to make sense of the world on a non-rational level.
So what religion _can't_ you find at Barnes and Noble?
