here is my best possible explanation, the brain is made up of 3 parts, concuss, sub-concuss, and super ego. between wake and sleep our concuss mind and sub-concuss mind actually link together. and in rem or deep sleep its or super ego and sub-concuss linking together, dammit Kirk i am not a doctor.

metavariable has the right answer. It's called sleep paralysis. It isn't aliens or out-of-body experiences or anything supernatural. You're just in a half-awake, half-asleep state, and your body is paralyzed because your brain secretes a hormone designed to keep your lower extremities still while you're asleep, so you don't hurt yourself by flailing about in REM sleep(basically so you don't act out your dreams. For some reason, this doesn't work so well in sleepwalkers:).
As for the shapes and faces, remember, you're still somwhat asleep, so it's just residual brain activity from REM sleep.
It happens to me too. It used to freak me out something serious, but now that I know what it is, I just ride it out.

Somnambulism means sleep walking. What you are talking about is the reverse of twighlight stage of sleep. The twighlight stage of sleep really is the transition period from being awake to falling asleep at the beginning of the night. Those awakened from the twighight stage would contest that they have not even fallen asleep and that they were just getting sleepy, when in reality they were very, very close to the 1st stage of sleep which is NREM sleep or non dream sleep. But there is something similar in being asleep and then awaking in the morning. There is no name for it because it cannot be scientifically proven with the scientific method but by following the rules of logic.. "Those awakened from twighlight stage would contest that they have not even fallen asleep" then those who are about to wake up, in the reverse stage, would contest that they were still asleep and experiencing dreams. Anyone who's finished college with a degree in biology is welcome to contest me on this answer.

Well, if this is what you meant..Like you wake up and can't move and it feels very scary, I been through that. It feels like someone is holding you down, and you can't move. But after taking psychology, i found out that it's because when you sleep, your brain and body goes through 4or 5 stages of sleeping cycle. And your body starts to shut down after stage 2 i think, and if you wake up when you're not suppose to, you won't be able to move, because it takes time to send message from your brain back down. So I don't know which one to believe either...

Yes, the 'not being able to move' part is called sleep paralysis and the hallucinations are sometimes attributed to lucid dreaming. (I myself have often seen spiders, big ones!, which fade as I wake more fully). There are sites on the net you can look up which can help explain it better, but dont worry, its quite normal

Ugh. Often experienced it, and I'll tell you from experience that is how it feels when you're coming out of a coma.
I think its the verge of REM sleep and waking, so you're not really asleep, but also not entirely awake. My significant other calls it his "free association mode".

I had that happen when I was younger. I split my skull trying to wake up. The difference was my eyes were open. Just every where I looked I was still in my dream. I could communicate coherently with my siblings, I could move, I could do anything except see where i was. I was still in my dream. It freaked me out. I haven't had it happen since.

It's called sleep paralysis or night terrors. Often it happens to people during the night. It's the most likely explanation for most alien abduction memories.

Yes yes!! Only that I am not paralyzed.
I know what it is! I started noticing these images while still awake with my eyes closed, like right after I wake up or feeling very relaxed and rested with my eyes closed. This is the beginning of clairvoyance.
They do have meaning. Actually most of it is symbolic, but not always, it depends, so you need to know how to interpret them. I'll give you an example:
When my ex gf came into my room (we were in separate rooms) one night, I was already laying in bed reading. She talked to me that it was going to be our "last conversation about our relationship." So we talked for a bit, and then she left the room. I laid down and closed my eyes, just feeling not ready for bed but wanted to lay down.
All of sudden, I saw a small airplane crash (no fire), and then next I saw a brand new headstone with new flowers. I opened my eyes and went "What the heck!?" That had never happened to me before, seeing pictures like that while awake. But when I looked at the symbolism of it, I realized it meant the end of our relationship. Wow!
Another example was while almost falling asleep, I was holding in my hands a book that I published about the Divine Mother only that it was a photocopy like how you copy the pages of a book in a copier. So this picture was half literal and half symbolic. The symbolism of "copying" meant that the information will be given to me kind of like channelling. The next day a psychic who gave me a reading told me that I WILL publish a book about the Divine Mother. I was like wow! I just had that information shown to me the day before, and it became confirmed by her.
On my blog, I wrote a post on how I started for the very first time asking a question telepathically and receiving answers via these pictures right afterwards which I had to be very relaxed and eyes closed. I had never done that before and wanted to find out if I could do it. And it worked right away and wrote down the results of it. http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-O50H77Iib6fVzcbXCb1eO_cIAk0-?cq=1&l=41&u=45&mx=111&lmt=5&p=267
I also have another example of a picture that came to me right after I woke up that I wrote on my blog called "Fear of the Divine Mother" http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-O50H77Iib6fVzcbXCb1eO_cIAk0-?cq=1&l=16&u=20&mx=111&lmt=5&p=393
If you write down the images as soon as you receive them and try to interpret them often, over time, you will be more aware of what is going on with yourself and would stop feeling paralized. Actually, you'll be able to do it at will, like go lay down and really relax until you feel like you are drifting, this is the Alpha stage in the brainwaves, then pictures will come to you.
It's even better if you ask a question first, that way you can understand their meaning easier. I ask my questions to Amma who is the incarnation of the Divine Mother. She communicates to people telepathically all over the world. So if you want someone to ask questions and receive answers via those pictures, then direct your questions to her, and she will answer them right away.
I always write about this on my 360 blog and have many more relevant posts, so if you want to learn more about it, then just link up with mine and/or email me for help in intepreting the pictures as I've become good at it. This is the beginning of a great journey within!

sometimes when you sleep you can have an "out of body experience" where you leave your body and like your spirit goes somewhere else, and when you're waking up it goes back to your body, and sometimes you cant move an you can still see things from where you were before.
