In the cartoon advertisements for Sea Monkeys — found in 1970s comic books next to ads for X-Ray Specs and trick soap that turned hands black , the creatures looked like a 1950s TV family.

The husband occasionally carried a briefcase and tousled the kelpy hair of his young son. The blond-haired wife cradled an infant. But both the ad's blatant and subliminal cues were clearly keyed to pre-pubescent boys. The Sea Monkeys were naked. The woman wore no wedding ring and crossed her long legs seductively. The husband and wife wore the smiles of swingers.

Just maybe, you thought, if you saved up your allowance, you could grow a woman. She might be part monkey and live underwater, but still...

ooohh you had to bring up those 70's sea monkey's! What do you think brought me to Florida? Those damn sea monkey's thats who...They grew into 420lb. creatures no very cute I might add. The rumors started by the town folk in Pennsylvania and they all showed up at the farm at night with torches and pitch forks with the sheriff and the mayor. I had to put them aboard my truck and transport them to the swamp here for their own safety. I didn't have the heart to leave em there..they look sorta like sea horses. They swim with the manatees now!

Hey hey hey! Sea Monkeys go back to the 60s, kid. My sea Monkeys got an inch long and pretty gross, with all those little legs a-churning. Nothing terribly seductive there.
Now, the X-Ray specs ... there was an ad for pre-pubes! Looking through clothing! Looking through doors and walls!
But you know, they just didn't work.
Remember the "Nuclear Missile Sub" for $8? I ordered that one ... got a carboard box with a sub printed on the outside.
What about the stink bombs ... in the ad, everybody is grimmacing from the stink, except the guy who set it off ... evidently he LIKES the smell of rotten eggs.
Yeeah, there was a lot of thought that went into marketing that crapola. What a pity there was no thought put into the products themselves.

Man that must be some serious flashback to read all that into a cheap a$$ ad for some damn sea monkeys. All I can say is that sex and violence were all we saw in the 70s. All the cartoons were violent. There was all the sex appeal shows like charlies angels. There there was Morgan Fairchild and all her shows, posters and crap. And you are seeing this in a ad at the back of a comic.

my nieces got some sea monkies a month and a half ago. initially they had them in a plastic bottle to hatch. my brother came along and used the water(and the sea monkies) to make coffee. it was pretty good.

It's apparent to me that that 70's did you a disservice because you actually remember all those details. you have a lot of catching up to do. Of course, you can only get 'ludes in their mutated form anymore.

*laughing* I think you enjoyed the 70s a bit too much. I remember those ads and I can't say I saw that in it AT ALL.
