Is katakana really necessary? I mean, I know they use it for foreign words instead of hiragana, but couldn't those words be written in hiragana too? Is this the only purpose of katakana? Is it an option to write foreign words in either of those two alphabets?

Please remember if you answer that I know next to nothing about Japanese.

I was born in an english speaking environment. My parents never spoke to my siblings& me in our native language. Then we had to go back home and I cant get along with my peers over here because I'm different. I seem odd to them. Its been 3 years and I still cant speak it because I'm so tense about it. What do you think?

If I was speaking and trying to say "There are many beaches", would I say "Son muchas playas" or "Son playas muchas" or something completely different?
