It seems there are few left who care enough to make an effort. With all the "check grammar and spelling" tools on our PCs, the illiteracy I see just blows my mind! It is so sad.

Russians call their capital city Moskva. So do most non-Russians. Malagasy people call their capital Antananarivo. English is about the only language which changes this to Tananarive. Similarly Warsaw and Varsovie. Most languages only change place names which their speakers find difficult to pronounce, like German changing Oswieçim to Auschwitz, but we do it even when it isn't necessary. Why?

Does anyone here speak both English and Spanish fluently and can help me with some questions I have? I need to know how to say "my oldest brother is" and stuff like that. It needs to be someone that will check their mail often enough so that I don't have to wait too long. I know the basic thing to say, but I want to make sure my grammer is alright. Thanks, if anyone can help me.

We're working on 'si' clauses in class, and we were given a worksheet. I need to come up with two questions like these:
Si tu avais eu la possibilite, a quelle epoque historique aurais-tu voulu vivre?
Si Mel Gibson vous avait telephone avant de quitter le bar, quel conseil lui aurais-tu donne?

The Mel Gibson question shows that they can be fun questions, but I can't even think of ideas for them. I keep coming up with ideas better expressed with imparfait+conditionnel, when I need plus-que-parfait+passe du conditionnel. Can anybody help?? Thanks

* I've never been to Europe and getting detailed info about Croatia is pretty hard. There's not too many sources.

Question: Is English widely spoken in Croatia?

I would like to visit but I know no one there and I can't speak or even understand the slightest of Croatian.

I think it's important to learn a new word and use it every day!

Today I discovered the word 'distaff' - as a noun, the sphere of work by women; as an adjective, characteristic of a woman.

Do you have a new word too?
