Qur'an.....Koran?

Question

Just wondering why people spell it Koran and not Qur'an, and why people try to correct the spelling of Quran to Koran.

The correct pronounciation, to be prasice is Qur'aan [pronounce Qur (pronouncing the 'R')- aan (long vowel 'A')

my point was why do people correct the spellin of quran to koran and insist it wrong, when that is closer to correct pronounciation...thats all

i dont mind how people speel it, doesnt make much difference, but why insist they are right?

The Arabic letter "Qaf" which is the first letter in the word Qur'an, doesn't exist in the English or western alphabet. That's why it could be written either with a "Q" or a "K".

I prefer calling it "Qur'an", because that's the closest way to tranliterate the Arabic word which contains two non-western letters, the "Qaf" and the "hamza" or " ' ".

I spell it Qur'an, but, I guess it wouldn't really matter, now would it? Anyway, the only reason why I do is because that's how it's pronounced in Arabic. Besides, for me, it's weird if I spell it Koran, but whatever.

Thankhs.During the 19th century there was a tendency to anglicize all sounds, Indian river Ganga was spelt Ganges, Mumbai was Bombay-ed> Mohammad was written as Mahomet, Musulmen was used as a plural for Musalman, etc. Now there is increased sensitivity towards pronouncing it the way it should be.

both ways its right, its just the name they call in the west, if u want to right the presise spelling, the closest is Qur-an or Qur'an...the apostrophe or the dash indicates that there is a halt between r and a, therefore when u say it, the HAMZA is pronounced right even if it is just a single 'a'.

In my hometown, we write it ;
Al Qur`an

and spell it
Al Kur`an

because the q in qaf (arabic alphabet) is not exist, so there r no different way of the pronunciation

Right, like shi'ites, bloke in our village was out there in the War and they were called Shitties then.
At the end of the day there is sod all difference whch ever way it is spelled when it is pronounced in a brummie accent.

hey used to think that it was Koran. But if you look in more new textbooks they spell it Qur'an

In my experience, Arabs don't seem to mind. Most spelling is phonetic, and 'Koran' is a convenient westernisation....

I think that all of them are right ,but i use Qur'an the most .
