It seems there are few left who care enough to make an effort. With all the "check grammar and spelling" tools on our PCs, the illiteracy I see just blows my mind! It is so sad.

Oh BRAVO!!!
This has likely been the most entertaining question I've ever submitted! LOOOOVE your answers... more, more!
On a side note, I certainly don't intend for anyone to take the question as a personal assault (hey, I'm chillin' Joanne), but only to give it some thought and share.
As far as Shakespeare is concerned (as if I could know), lets just compare the success of communications in Shakespeare's day with the current day. My own personal belief is that a little more attention to our language skills might lead to a little more success with good communication. I mean, how frequently do you suppose there are misunderstandings that result from something as simple as poor language skills? And how often are judgements made based on someone's (mis)perceived illiteracy? Like I said, its sad.
(c'mon, someone count my blunders, haha)

Alas, my friend, we are few these these days to care about such things!!!
What with "televisionese" as a language, mobile phone message abreviations, and floundering education levels...What can we expect?
Everyone is in such a hurry these days, that they cannot be bothered with proper grammar, much less worry about eloquence!
It is a pleasure when you find someone who does...
Thank you!

It is sad to see bad grammar on sites that are not chat sites. It is annoying to see bad grammar on chat sites every once in a while but on chat sites it's ok to use abbreviations or things of that nature because it is an extremely informal environment. Yeah, our schools have low standards, but not so much so that Little Johnny can't spell or learn correct grammar. If Little Johnny doesn't know it then Little Johnny should pay attention in school or at least come to class every once in a while.

The one thing I notice a lot is the misuse of "there", "their", and "they're". If the school system lets anything slide, it's that.

P.S: I'm really tired of ppl blaming stuff on rap when they can't find any other scapegoat. I'm not a huge fan of rap, but it's unnecessary to blame things on it all the time.

I care about correct spelling and grammar! I dont know why so many people dont care anymore. All it does is make Americans seem stupid. In the pre-spell check days, everyone knew how to spell because there was no going back with the type writer. Great point!

i think of Shizzle might have been suspended. The final time I heard from Persephone, she grew to become into having cyber web issues. She pronounced that she'd be offline for awhile. Her 360 internet site hasn't shown any sign of life recently the two. *Edit - Now that i think of of it...has every physique considered P.wall around?

Fewer people read as much as they did in, say, the Victorian era. Just that makes an impact on everyone's overall vocabulary and grammar knowledge.

It has to do with what they teach in school these days. It doesn't matter if it is spelled correctly or if you use proper grammar. If you get close to the correct answer, that's good enough. We don't want to damage little Johnny's self esteem, now do we? It makes me sick. And did you notice that despite the fact that Yahoo Answers has a spell check, the first answer still has a misspelled word?

Good grammar isn't so vital. What is vital is that language is vital; meaning that, language is alive. That is to say, people create, invent and experience language continuously, as we create new ideas, scenarios and concepts. A set of pre-established rules from the past acts in opposition to this end, because it puts chains on the evolution of language. Shakespeare himself invented thousands of words. More importantly, he created a model of consciousness through his characters; for us to model ourselves by creating words, not just using them as currency of communication. He created a blueprint, through his works, for words to be an Experience, of all senses, as well as mind. They are inventions of our souls, carrying full breadth of the visceral to the sublime. You could say, he took the biblical M.O. of the higher power, God, providing the "word", to a new paradigm of Man being the purveyor of creation....

I couldn't agree more, and I think it has a lot to do with the substandard education in our schools. They have lowered the standards so far that it's virtually impossible to get educated properly anymore !!!
