Okay, the word "gringo", when latin americans call us Americans that, are they using it in a negative way?

And, concerning Hugo Chavez, Fidel, and other Latin Americans for that matter, do they hate all Americans, or only the government and George W. Bush? Because I am against Bush, I really can't stand this government anymore and I'm majoring in Spanish, so eventually I'm going to study abroad somewhere and I don't want to be harrassed and hated just because I was born in the U.S. Do they realize that just because we're born here that doesn't mean we support the actions of our government? I don't want to be hated just because my government sucks.

Can anybody shed some light on this issue for me?

These days I find that you can hardly read any post or talk to anyone overseas that aren't bashing Americans somehow. I wish the rest of the world would realize that not everyone in our country supports what it is our country is doing. A lot of people hate the administration we have in power, myself included, and yet only HALF of our country voted for them (I know I surely didn't). It seems to me that only 2% of the people in this country hold any real power yet whenever an American goes overseas, (and most of us who do aren't in that 2% category) other people look down their noses at us. In a way it makes me feel insecure about living here but then again it seems that a lot of the people who judge us are just as ignorant as they claim us to be if that is how they act. I know whenever I met someone from another country I don't react with scorn, regardless of what country they are from or the propaganda that has been split about their area. So what's truly up with the hatred?

I noticed asians only associate with other asians even the ones who speak perfect English. Seems they stick together. Why is that? Only times I noticed them talking to other race were for school related.

Having read the previous question 'what is so great about USA'? Most of the Answers were regarding freedom. Have I missed something, do we not have freedom in this country? Do we not have shops that open 24 hours, and electricity? Slavery has been abolished for a while now, we can all read and write and do have some education for our children.

I am proud in some ways to be an american, but i am not proud of the decisions our president and government make. i think americans have a problem with thinking they are great and wonderful, and fail to see things from another countries point of view.

It's a new trend for the white women in the swingers circles we frequent....they all want the trophy black stud. I think what it is is that women now want to taste what used to be forbidden. Let's hear it ladies, is that why you are wanting to try black? Because it is acceptable today?

The latest report from UNICEF shows that Netherlands and Sweden and Denmark and Spain take care of their children well, but Britain and the US come in at the bottom of the list.

They measure things like health, life expectancy, access to education, problems with dangerous behavior, nutrition, etc.

The results show that caring for children in a culture has no relationship to the country's relative wealth.

Do you agree?

My work is associated with east African countries, mostly Kenya and Ethiopia. I just got back from Ethiopia with the weirdest encounter of my life, which changed my previous sympathy for the country. It all started with me and my co-worker as we visited the Lake Tana that’s the origin of Nile River in Ethiopia. There on the lake were these poor Ethiopians trying to fish while we sow one man dropping bunch of fishes, crabs, shrimps and lobsters, etc..back to the lake, I asked him why he was doing that, he looked at me with surprise and asked with broken English what else he could do with them. I told him why couldn’t he eat them or give them to other people, he shouted out, how people could eat such things and left immediately. We were both so surprise, imagine how shrimps and crabs can’t be eaten and the weird part is, they are Ethiopians always suffering with hunger and famine. After we encounter this we tried to show to the local people how to eat, shrimps, crabs and different kinds of fish as they only eat one type of fish , we cooked and tried to give them to taste, some of them were actually vomiting for just watching us eat and none of them dare to try, my friend was laughing at their stupidity but I was actually offended and the worst part is not just sea foods that they don’t know how to eat, we found out there are many types vegetables that they don’t know how to eat specially mushroom they call it “ umbrella of hyena” and children play with is everywhere on the street , but no one use them as food, my general encounter is that poverty is both mental and physical in Ethiopia and they are the poorest and the most proudest people I have ever seen. Can you imagine, they think eating pork is disobeying God? Anyway Kenya is relatively better, actually they are growing economically better than Ethiopians, and they know mushrooms, sea foods and pork are for food. My friend and I now working on project to teach Ethiopians what to eat hopefully we can get somewhere, anyone who read this can give me idea to include in the project I am posting this again & again because I haven’t really got good idea for my project

At the moment this is a big story, kids carrying knifes and more importantly using them as weapons.
I have a confession, I purchased (illegally) a knife when I was 10/11 and actually used to take it to school (this is in the 80's). Not for self protection but so I could whittle wood and feel a bit more grown up I suppose, the thing is "it didn't do me any harm", as usual haven't we (the media) jumped on to the wrong bandwagon. Doesn't it all boil down to respect ? The kids who use knifes against each other more than likely come from a single parent family something the government appear to encourage. When are we going to realise that these problems are generated by our society and our strive for individual freedoms and not the actual weapons themselves. It is no surprise that that UNICEF survey put us at the bottom wrt children.

I always wonders why or how does pants are link to Man's Fashion in Western culture and skirt is to women. Is it because of the hard work that the men are traditionally link to? Yet the scottish men wear kilt. Is it to differenciate between man & women ? but in arab world both man & woman wear long blouse, while in asia traditionally both men & women wear sarong.
anybody know?
