The name Indian as the monicker for Native Americans came From Columbus.When he landed on what he thought was the West Indes and /or India he called the people Indians not knowing he was nowhere near India.
The name Indians was carried over to the west in the fact of the explorers took the name that Columbus had put on the people and carried it to the west and it stuck with the glamor days of the wild west.
Now politicaly correct ness is the Native American.

When Christopher Columbus arrived here in N. America, he truly believed that he had found a new route from Spain/Portugal to India which was his goal for setting forth to begin with. He never imagined bumping into an entirely new continent. Therefore, he called the peoples he found here "Indians" and the name stuck until the last 30+ years when the term Native Americans (since they were here long before white men) came into use. "True" Indians, then, are from India.

to call native americans indians is a mistake because people called the native americans indians when columbus first got here because they thought they were in india so they called them indians. the term caught on even after they realized they discovered a new continent so thats why native americans are called indians. so indians are from india and native americans are just called native americans.
