Having read the previous question 'what is so great about USA'? Most of the Answers were regarding freedom. Have I missed something, do we not have freedom in this country? Do we not have shops that open 24 hours, and electricity? Slavery has been abolished for a while now, we can all read and write and do have some education for our children.

I am an American, and I do love my country. But that doesn't mean it is perfect. There are problems here, and we know it. Personally, I don't think Americans invented freedom. It just happens to be something that we value so much in our country that we can't help talking about it. :) I will admit that many Americans are self centered and only worry about what's going on at our own door. I am trying not to be like this. I think the world is amazing and I hope to learn more about it and its people.

Thank you so much for addressing this problem, because I was just about to ask the same myself.

I'm American-European-Bermudian myself, and I grew up outside of the United States. Firstly, let me say I have no problem with the US, it's a nice country and I wouldn't mind living here for a bit - however, it is by no means the 'best' country or even the 'most free'.

In fact, I find the United States very censored and constricting in terms of it's media in comparison to other developed countries. I can't imagine people throwing a fit in France over the fact that someone showed a breast on television, and then slamming the network with fines. Likewise, everyone's so concerned about being politically correct and not getting sued - that they really are not allowed the freedom to speak and do as they'd like as much as they want to, because they're afraid to step on anyone's toes. They're suing whole networks because they had a bunch of ads that they 'thought' looked like bombs, so now people are going to have to go through all this paperwork and such. You need to ID for video games! The Land of the Free? Maybe back in the day, but not now!

There are great things about the US, I do agree - and it is a nice country. But the most freedom and the best? Certainly not!

If they said that, all other countries invented love and justice.
They can have freedom, but without time to rest, without time to be happy, and to decide to invade other countries killing innocent people.
If they mean the history about discovering America and call it freedom (freedom from UK?), it´d better shut the mouth because the real history was very sad!!

Actually the Brits dropped slavery long before the USA . We have freedom over most of the world, with only a few exceptions. So what is the big deal?

Uh oh a lot more thumbs down coming my way....

because for the Europeans that took the new world, which would be named America, it was freedom. So now there has been generation teaching the next generation what freedom means. So the idea of freedom didn't actually start in America, but because of the idea of being free from the Queen of England.

I dont think that americans think that.

However, no other country offers individual freedoms, rights and the ability to be the master of your destiny to the same level as USA.

Their laws arent eroded on a weekly basis.Everytime there is public outrage in britain,Blair takes the opportunity to impose further restrictions "for our own security".

Perhaps your question and many answers have a left wing prejuidice towards USA ,because it has become fashionable to be ignorant.

If you dont appreciate what america is doing in the name of freedom and the blood it has shed in former conflicts then you should live in Iran for a while to give you some perspective.

{british} Proud to be allies and friends with USA

The real reason why they think they invented freedom is because the first settlers (excluding the natives) were all prisoners that were let loose on the land due to lack of space back in Europe where they came from.

the us was teh last western country to abolish slavery.
they were also not the first to draft a constitution.

in 14 smoething (dont know the exact year) the union of utrecht was signed ensuring basic rights to people in the Benelux.

democracy was also not invented by americans, but by the greek. 200ish B.C.

most americans seem to be fooled by propaganda. theres not a day in an americans life that he doesnt see, hear or is reminded by tv, radio or otherwise of the fact that the us is the greatest country in the world.
