Or more specifically, who are the virgins and other servants who dote on and care for martyrs, as an example. If these servants exist in heaven, were they not saved themselves? Why must they serve? Does the Koran address this?

I have the power to send you to hell when you die. I'm going to send you to hell, unless you change my mind by sending me a donation of five dollars.

Sure, I might be lying, but how can you ever know for certain? It's just a measely five dollars, and isn't it worth it to be safe and secure in the knowledge that I won't send you to hell? What's five dollars against the merest possibility that I might be right? Are you willing to take that chance?

Remember that this is not a normal betting situation. The payoff is infinite and the cost is finite. If there is any chance, no matter how small, that I can damn you then it's a good bet to send me the money. You have so little to lose, and infinitely much to gain.

Should I send you my paypal account address? If you don't believe I can send you to hell, why should we believe your God can do the same to us? Because he said so in a book? Well, I'm saying so here on Yahoo Answers. Does Pascal's Wager still make sense to you?

I'm totally ready to be viciously attacked, but I've always wondered..isn't being gay just another sexual perversion, like a foot fetish,beastiality, child molestation? Of course it's more socially acceptable because it's between consenting people, but really, what's the difference? People are sexually attracted to animals,feet,children, same sex,what's the difference,besides the consenting part?

while still in Egypt?

2) It is written in Exodus that God hardened the hearts of Egyptians in order to be in conflict with them and showed his power. Does that mean that God provokes disobidience and then punishes people like he did with Egyptians?

3) When the Israelites were starving because of femine, God said they should go to Egypt. This implies that His chosen people would have perished if they didn't go to Egypt. When Jesus was born, his "parents" were told to take him to exile in Egypt. This means that Christianity wouldn't have come to being as Jesus would have died but for fleeing to Egypt. So, why Egypt in this two important events of formation of Christian history?

PS. I am no Christian or believer in any religion. I'm just trying to make sense of the bible.

i live in the mid west and there is supposed to be a ice storm heading my way. my husband is overseas and it's just me and our two small children at home. my parents want me to come stay at their house cause if the power lines go down i won't have heat at my house. my parents drive me insane!!!!! i can't stand them!!!!! I know it would be best for my children though. how can i get through the next couple of days without pulling my hair out?

Who is Isa? God named him Yeshua (Savior) because he would save his people from sin. Allah says he is not the savior? His name was Savior and God named him that but Allah forgot or what? How come the Gospel knows the word is Savior and that name is true to the Gospel and yet he was named before the Gospel and the Qu'ran by God. Why is his name in agreement with the Gospel but not the Qu'ran when both are suposed to be the same God and the Gospel could have been corupted according to Muslims Did those meanys that corrupted God's word also corrupt the name of Jesus before the Gospel was written? Seems to me the only place anyone ever heard this name Isa is in the Qu'ran as Jews called this man Yeshua Christians call him Jesus...Arabic Christians call him Yasu...Where did Muahmmed get this name Isa could it be from Esau? Surely Allah did not anme a mere messenger Savior? But God sure did! Then how is Allah God? And who the heck is ISA? When Allah said say your God is my God did he forget?

The most powerful part of Pascal's argument is not his refutation of atheism as a foolish wager (that comes last) but his refutation of agnosticism as impossible. Agnosticism, not-knowing, maintaining a sceptical, uncommitted attitude, seems to be the most reasonable option. The agnostic says, "The right thing is not to wager at all." Pascal replies, "But you must wager. There is no choice. You are already committed [embarked]." We are not outside observers of life, but participants. We are like ships that need to get home, sailing past a port that has signs on it proclaiming that it is our true home and our true happiness. The ships are our own lives and the signs on the port say "God". The agnostic says he will neither put in at that port (believe) nor turn away from it (disbelieve) but stay anchored a reasonable distance away until the weather clears and he can see better whether this is the true port or a fake (for there are a lot of fakes around). Why is this attitude unreasonable, even impossible? Because we are moving. The ship of life is moving along the waters of time, and there comes a point of no return, when our fuel runs out, when it is too late. The Wager works because of the fact of death.

Suppose Romeo proposes to Juliet and Juliet says, "Give me some time to make up my mind." Suppose Romeo keeps coming back day after day, and Juliet keeps saying the same thing day after day: "Perhaps tomorrow." In the words of a small, female, red-haired American philosopher, "Tomorrow is always a day away. And there comes a time when there are no more tomorrows. Then "maybe" becomes "no". Romeo will die. Corpses do not marry. Christianity is God's marriage proposal to the soul. Saying "maybe" and "perhaps tomorrow" cannot continue indefinitely because life does not continue indefinitely. The weather will never clear enough for the agnostic navigator to be sure whether the port is true home or false just by looking at it through binoculars from a distance. He has to take a chance, on this port or some other, or he will never get home.

Once it is decided that we must wager; once it is decided that there are only two options, theism and atheism, not three, theism, atheism, and agnosticism; then the rest of the argument is simple. Atheism is a terrible bet. It gives you no chance of winning the red prize. Pascal states the argument this way:

You have two things to lose: the true and the good; and two things to stake: your reason and your will, your knowledge and your happiness; and your nature has two things to avoid: error and wretchedness. Since you must necessarily choose, your reason is no more affronted by choosing one rather than the other. That is one point cleared up. But your happiness? Let us weigh up the gain and the loss involved in calling heads that God exists. Let us assess the two cases: if you win, you win everything: if you lose, you lose nothing. Do not hesitate then: wager that he does exist.

If God does not exist, it does not matter how you wager, for there is nothing to win after death and nothing to lose after death. But if God does exist, your only chance of winning eternal happiness is to believe, and your only chance of losing it is to refuse to believe. As Pascal says, "I should be much more afraid of being mistaken and then finding out that Christianity is true than of being mistaken in believing it to be true." If you believe too much, you neither win nor lose eternal happiness. But if you believe too little, you risk losing everything.
