The following is a problem in my summer calculus packet...

There is a triangle symbol in the problem, and I don't know what that means. Since I don't have a triangle key on my keyboard, pretend that the "@" symbol is a triangle.

So, here is the problem:
Find f(x + @x) for f(x)=x^2 - 2x - 3

I'm in 8th grade, and I just started algebra 1.
I absolutely love it, but my teacher never explained inputs and outputs, and i have 3 questions on it.
I just guessed and tried to figure it out, so is this right?
'The output of a function is 5 more than 2 times the input. Find the input when the output is 17.'
I think the answer is 6 because in order for an equation to equal 17 the equation would have to be 6(2) + 5
Am I right or wrong?
