I'm in 8th grade, and I just started algebra 1.
I absolutely love it, but my teacher never explained inputs and outputs, and i have 3 questions on it.
I just guessed and tried to figure it out, so is this right?
'The output of a function is 5 more than 2 times the input. Find the input when the output is 17.'
I think the answer is 6 because in order for an equation to equal 17 the equation would have to be 6(2) + 5
Am I right or wrong?

One way to think of it is like a microwave. You put cold food in the microwave, something happens to the food, and hot food comes out.

You are right. You put a 6 into the "function". It gets multiplied by 2 and added to 5, so a 17 comes out.

Just some names: Every possible things you could stick into "function" is called the domain and everything that could come out is called the range.

Sounds like you got it though. Good luck.

Yes. When you get further along in Algebra, you will get equations like y = f(x) where f(x) coud be X^2 +2x +3.
The input would be x and the output would be y or f(x).

Glad you love Algebra.

F(3) = 15 No, 3 is the input. The output is the other number in that row (under the output column).
