3p - 1 = 5(p-1) - 2(7-2p)

Distribute the multiplications...

3p - 1 = 5p - 5 - 14 + 4p

Simplify each side...

3p - 1 = 9p - 19

Subtract 9p and add 1 for both sides...

-6p = -18

Divide both sides by -6...

p = 3

Hi
3p -1 = 5p - 5 -14 + 4p
3p -1 = 9p - 19
-6p = -18
6p = 18
p = 3
Do you know how this is done? First you simplify, then you put the p and the numbers on opposite sides.
Hope this helped :-)

3p -1 = 5p -5 - 14 + 4p^2
4p^2 + 2p - 18 = 0
2p^2 + p - 9 = 0 .. solving
p = -2.386 . . . and . . . 1.886
OK . . .. i got it wrong
its the p^2
