I have tried it with mathematica but the result is too complicated to be simplified. I need a simplified expression. By the way a/b is a finite quantity.

Where do the circular trigonometric functions (such as sine and cosine) come from? I am not asking for their definitions. I am asking for their names. Where does the word "sine" come from?

I have heard they have Arabic origins but I am not sure.

integral (1/x dx) = ln x
but if I use integration by parts..
integral (1/x dx) where u= 1/x; dV=dx; dU =-(1/x^2)dx; V=x
it becomes:
integral (1/x dx)= (1/x)*x - int (x * (-1/x^2) dx
so
int (1/x dx)= 1 + int (1/x dx)
thus ln x = 1 + ln x....... !? if u substract both side by ln x it becomes 0=1 !!!!???
tell me what's wrong..
i don't think it's a matter of the constant...

A large water tank has two inlet pipes (a large one and a small one) and one outlet pipe. It takes 3 hours to fill the tank with the large inlet pipe. On the other hand, it takes 5 hours to fill the tank with the small inlet pipe. The outlet pipe allows the full tank to be emptied in 8 hours.

What fraction of the tank (initially empty) will be filled in 1.22 hours if all three pipes are in operation? Give your answer to two decimal places (e.g., 0.25, 0.5, or 0.75).

In "homework help" question dated a couple days ago, one poster mentioned Peano postulates (??don't try and explain what they are; I nearly flunked HS algebra and geometry) and put down a whole BUNCH of scary looking proofs. I assume he was having a giggle with the OP and this is on a par with Nessie or Bigfoot.
My technogeek husband mentioned that some intrepid souls actually sat down once and tried to "prove" as many mathematical basics as possible. They were trying to reduce the number of axioms/givens in use. Then Godel (spelling?) came up with some kind of weird theory....
He is teasing me, right? Did someone with way too much time on their hands actually sit down and establish, with way too many equations and formulas, what any nitwit can.....?
Math history buffs, help!

we cannot take a topic related to statistics b'coz that is already taken by most of the people.
