Fill the five liter flask.

Pour into the three liter flask until the three liter flask is full.

You now have two liters in the five liter flask.

Empty the three liter flask, and pour the contents of the five liter flask into the three liter flask.

Refill the five liter flask and fill up the three liter flask with one liter from the five. Because the three liter flask had two liters of water in it, you can only add one, thereby subtracting one from the other flask.

That leaves you with 5 - 1 = 4 liters in the five liter flask.

Fill the 3 lt up and pour into the 5 lt. Then refill the 3 and pour into the 5 until full, leaving 1 lt in the 3lt jug. Empty the 5 lt and pour the 1 lt into the 5 lt. Refull the 3 lt and pour into the 5 lt that already has 1 lt in it. That makes 4 lts

Take the five liter flask and fill it up, then pour this into the three liter container leaving two liters in the five liter container. Empty the three liter container completely and pour the two liters from the five liter into the three liter container. Next, fill the five liter container to the brim and then gently pour the water from this filler container into the three liter till it rises from having two liters to getting a full three liters. Now ypu have exactly four liters in the five liter container....Hope that helps mate!!

Two entirely different methods are given by the four answerers. These water problems often have more than one solution (so to speak).
