My colleague keeps emailing round logic puzzles, and I normally spend several hours beating my head against the wall trying to figure out how many pirates it will take to extinguish 99 lightbulbs in the given time, using only one match and a banana (or something like that).

I wish to take revenge by setting him a really tough logic puzzle. Anyone know any good ones?

a shop sell a pair of jeans at $50, you ask you mother for $25 and your father for another $50. you go to the shop and they give you $5 discount, you go back home and give your mother $1 back and your father a $1, so you owe your parents $24 each and you have $3 extra. now $24 + $24+$3= $51 how do you get the $1 extra?

trust me there is a solution?

If you insist, I do not want much. Get your checkerboard and place one penny on the first square. Then place two pennies on the next square. Then place four pennies on the third square. Continue this until all 64 squares are covered with pennies.” As he’d been saving pennies for over 25 years, Mr. Brown did not consider this much of an award, but soon realized he made a miscalculation on the amount of money involved.

I have the problem (9-54i)(6-i) with multiply choice answers. The answer I came up with does not match any of the multiply choice answer. The answer I am getting is 54-63i+54i^2 which converts to 54+54(-1)-63i with the answer of -63i. The multiply choice answers are (A) 108+333i (B) 9i (C) 108-333i or (D)-333i. Am I figuring wrong, please someone help!!

I want a solid understanding of mathematics - the foundations of it and such, so looking into the development of it all would be a good start I would think. I'm looking for book recommendations and/or website resources on topics such as.. problems that caused parts of math to be developed, history of math.. some good resources on understanding it all. All that make any sense? Can't think of another way to explain it.
