Fertilizer generally contains nitrogen and phosphorus compounds required by plants. The nitrogen is often in the form of nitrates, and the phosphorus is in the form of phospates. Based on what you know about chemistry and water potential, why would overfertilizing lead to the death of a plant?

Any ideas for a plant-related topic that I can write about 5 pages about in my Plants and Society class? I'm having trouble with this because I'm not exactly science-inclined, and this is a requirement for my major. I have to mention at least 3 plant species in my paper, and that's about it for criteria. Anyone?

or relying on say-so ? When using a technical botanical manual, sometimes characteristics such as whether annual or perennial are noted, but if you are standing by the plant trying to figure it out, obviously one can't do the time test. (Someone once suggested that looking at the base of plant and noting old growth would do it...?)

Are Maple seeds (the "fruits" inside the "helicopters") edible?

I have parched some and they are delicious. (I ate 2 yesterday with no ill effects.) I would love to be able to grind these into a flour along with some other wild edibles that I am sure are safe.

The raw ones are tasty as well, but again I am not sure if they are a safe trail nibble.

There are so many wonderful healthy edibles in my pesticide free yard. It seems a shame to waste such a effortless garden. I'd bet my neighbors think I'm an odd sort. So be it, I have never been healthier.

Any tips on Maple "helicopter" seed survival uses are welcome.
