1. Cyanobacteria and plants both have cell walls and carry on photosynthesis using chlorophyll.
2. We cook food that might harbor bacteria to make the food safe to eat. This is why we thoroughly cook meat, foods containing eggs, ... We stored food in the refrigerator or freezer to slow down the growth of bacteria in foods that usually promote bacterial growth.
3. Archaebacteria can survive in some harsh conditions, but cold and dry aren't usually the conditions they are found in. However, some bacteria can form endospores to withstand dryness. Maybe the endospore-formers would be the ones.
4. I would measure the amount of dissolved oxygen to see if conditions would support aerobic bacteria or anaerobic bacteria.

It's because your tank hasn't cycled yet. Before adding fish to a tank, you are usually supposed to let it sit for about 6 weeks. In between these 6 weeks you're supposed to do small water changes, and check the parameters regularly (pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate). Although it is understandable that you had no choice as those poor fish were in plastic bags when you got them. The water also needs to be treated with a dechlorinater. I assumed it was classified as cruel and inhumane to give goldfish away at carnivals, although I live in Australia, and I've never seen it done. I think it should be illegal. Colour has nothing to do with sex, there are many breeds and colours of golfish. Goldfish usually need at least 80 litres for one fish, and an extra 40 litres for each additional golfish. So a 10 gallon wouldn't really be desirable, as they can grow very big. If that was all they had, that's fine. Although upgrading later would be advisable. I don't agree that carnivals can force you in to pet ownership and responsibility. You will need to do 25% water changes once a week, also remember to keep the filter operating all the time. Have a browse through google, and see what you may be able to find on keeping healthy goldfish. Good luck. EDIT: do not put a heater in there, goldfish are not supposed to live in warm water. Temperatures lower than 20 degrees Celcius and higher than 10 degrees Celcius are desirable.
