1) Sweet Potato - It ia an under ground ROOT that stores starch. The scientific name of the plant is Ipomoea batatas . It is from Solanaceae family.

2) Potato - It is an under ground tip of a STEM branch that stores starch. The scentific name of the plant is Solanum tuberosum and family is Solanaceae. That makes the two plants close relatives. Only food storage organs are different.
