There are two plants called "saltgrass." One is Distichlis spicata, which is native to much of the United States and is generally considered a weed.

Schizachyrium scoparium is the "desert saltgrass." It's also called little bluestem (to distinguish it from the somewhat closely related "big bluestem") or alkali grass, and it's a prominent part of the flora of the tallgrass prairie.
