g stands for grams. The weight of the animal. Heavier animals need more oxigen, you need to standarize it because a smaller animal can be consuming less oxigen (net) but actually be consuming a lot more compared to it's weight.
H stands for hour. If you're maesuring a consumption rate, you need to specify the time scale.

So it is the amount of oxigen consumed per hour, by an animal that weights g grams.

OSHA has establishes the levels for man. 20.9 % is normal level of oxygen . 19.5 is the lower limit and if it gets below this u will pass out. 23% is the explosive upper limit and at that level everything burns like it has gasoline on it.
