Oak / Fall

Well-last time I checked...Acorn's are the seed fruit of an Oak Tree! There are many different kinds of Oak trees. There are Red Oaks,White Oaks, and numerous other types-throughout North America! Oaks typically drop their fruit "Acorns" in the Fall period, where they work their way into the ground over the Winter season, and typically germinate or start their growth in the Spring! However...alot of Acorns will not survive because they are a common food source for wild animals like Squirrels and Deer! The best way to cultivate your Acorn-would be to start it in a Planter Pot,with the very same soil that you found the acorn in! Drench it at the outset,so as to soften the acorns hard shell-and get the germinating process underway! After that, you would only need to water it modestly well! When it begins to reach a considerably good size(outgrows the pot). Plant it outside in a good location on your property that has a moderate level of sunlight, using the dirtball the tree is in-from the pot! Preferably in the Late Spring, after the frost is no longer on the ground! This will give the young Oak time to develope a sustainable root structure to support itself with, and adjust to its introduced enviroment! Oaks are very enduring tree's,and can last hundreds of years! An average Oak can grow over a 100 ft. or more in size, and usually develope a very thick and sturdy Trunk! Your Acorn to Oak "discovery", will probably outlive you...unless someone cuts it down? Some get destroyed by common pests(Insects)! They are also highly prized for the richness and hardness of their wood, and are commonly used for Hardwood Flooring,Furniture,Cabinets etcetera!!! Hope this gives you some useful information-on the small Acorn treasure, that you have found. Thx. theerrander.

Quercus or oak. Your acorn could grow into whatever type you got the nut from. I include some pages to ID your nut.

White oaks from Europe, Asia, north Africa, & North America. The acorns mature in 6 months, sweet or slightly bitter, inside of acorn shell hairless.

The intermediate oaks of Southwest USA & northwest Mexico. Styles short, acorns mature in 18 months, very bitter, inside of acorn shell woolly.

The red oaks from North, Central & South America. Styles long, acorns mature in 18 months, very bitter, inside of acorn shell woolly.

There are Live oaks or evergreenoaks. See the 'Angel Oak'

Acorns come from any variety of oak tree. I recommend starting them in pots with lots of oak leaf mold and loamy soil. Lay the acorns on their side when you plant them.Once they are about a foot tall, you can put them in the ground.

They grow into oaks. You can plant them pretty much anytime because those acorns are very durable.
