Humans oxidize glucose in the presence of O2. For each mole of glucose oxidized about 686 kcal of energy is release. this is true whether the mole of glucose is oxidized in human cells or burned in the air. A calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temp of 1 g of water by 1'C ; 686 kcal=686,000cal. the average human requires about 2,000 kcal of energy per day, which is equivalent to about 3 mol of glucose per day.

in an experiment we burned peanuts to find out the energy content of it. The formula we used was (4.18*mass of water*change in temperature) / amount of food burnt. using that equation i get 11067 joules per gram or j/g. in kilojoules per gram i get 11.067. does this sound like reasonable values for a peanut? and is the formula ok?

If you could tell me that, and even thiough this is totally unrelated, do you have any ideas for my biology project? Kinda like a science fair, but it should have something to do with biology obviously, and it has to have measurements in time. ex: do scented candles affect plant growth? and you measure it over like 3 weeks or something.
Any ideas? Big grade here. It will help bring my finals grade up...
