Astronomy & Space - December 2007

The obvious answer is, of course, that these planets with intelligent life could be so far away that even at the speed of light it would take thousands or tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years for them to reach us.

But consider that many experts think there could be at least tens of billions of planets out there - or perhaps many, many times that.

That would mean that there is a strong likelihood that there is intelligent life out there, and that there are civilizations that precede us by perhaps millions of years.

By now, some civilizations surely would have developed the technologies to contact other worlds, travel to other worlds, or send out transmissions to other worlds.

But humanity has yet to make any contact with anyone out there?

Why is this?

Given the numbers, wouldn't it be a good guess that we should have heard from someone by now?

Is there really life out there?

My girlfriend swears people live in Satellites in Space. I however disagree, it is not humanly possible. So besides the International Space Station, and Space ships, what do astrnauts reside in?

I heard somewhere that Venus presents the same side towards Earth at all times (confirmed by Earth-based radar). It might seem to make sense, as Venus produces the third-highest gravitational influence on the Earth, (after the Moon and Sun). Is this possible, even accounting for the sheer distance between the two bodies?

My daughter asked me this question today. She's 9. Something to keep in mind when answering :) I told her I thought they would explode. Then she asked what they would turn into. I said probably smaller pieces of whatever the stars were made of. She thinks maybe black holes, which sounds like a better answer to me. Anyone with better, more technical info, feel free!
