Aliens from another planet have landed in your neighborhood and have asked you to show them around your town for one day in order to learn about life on Earth. Where do you take them and what do you do?

Does that take much sense?
They are new neighbors, you invite them over for coffee, DUH

But seirously to let them get to know Earth I would take them too...
1) The Mall- That has the stuff that is needed and wanted in most peoples life. That could introduce them to what people are like.
2) The Beach- They could experience earths scenery. I think that one would be pretty important.
3) A Barn- To introduce them to some of the earths creatures besides humans!
4) Electronics/Car Shop- Either one of these could help them understand the technology on earth.
5) A Restraunt- To learn about are food.

Contact the authorities, who have a larger perspective and more resources to reward such a long trip.
I live in the USA, which means, since I have contacted my federal government with a request for assistance, it will take quite a while until they arrive.
You could show the guests your whole state in the interim. Food is the first goal.
Natural wonders would be the second.
I think the best place to take them would be college level philosophy class and botany/anthropology.

I take them inside my house to get online and jokingly answer question like "do you believe in aliens" with a big fat NO, then laugh about it......

get on youtube for a few and then go to the local topless bar.

hopefully they'll take me for a spin around the local cluster afterwards

wow HotDockett, I guess great minds do think alike.

I'd take them to my computer, and show him Yahoo Answers. That's about all I seem to see these days. Then maybe take him to see a hospital, a homeless shelter, down-town, poor neighborhoods, rich neighborhoods, to see my parents and neighbors, to my sons elementary school (show and tell), to the super-market to get a 12 Pack, then fishing. Then we'd fish, joke, smoke, and talk. Maybe sqeeze in a trip to the club, later on in the evening.

Tell them to lock their ship up. Round here they can strip a car in under half an hour, a ufo would be broken down and at the scrap yard in minutes!

Tell them to keep the noise down and not to park their heap of rubbish near my house.

Tell them, " I don't have the time " but suggest they explore on their own. They made it this far without my help, I sure they will be o.k.
Anyhow it could be boring as they will probably spend hours just looking the insects etc.

First I would take pictures and then I would alert the National Inquirer to a possible sale.

Then I take them on tour of the nearest police station to get photographed, fingerprinted and collect real proof of ET’s existence for the FIRST time EVER. With optional, but strongly suggest DNA samples (come on it is only a little spit).

Then of course being a good American I would pump them for technological secrets like how to break the FTL (Faster Than Light) barrier so I can patent the idea and make millions.

Of course with my luck they will just flash me, probe, me and the film will be overexposed. The National Inquirer will laugh in my face and the police station will be closed for servicing or something stupid. The aliens will then explain their entire system to me and leave me with a brain wipe so I don’t remember anything except the foggy details.

The more we learn about our planet the more it seems like it is just one run of the mill planet that happens to have life. We don’t have the technology to find other earth sized planets yet, but we are getting close. From what we have seen so far there are a huge number of planets out there and the chances of every single one NOT having life is pretty remote. The problem is the question on intelligent life. SETI has been searching for radio signals for 40 years with no success, but that only means that within the 40 years closest to our planet there are no civilizations capable of (or wanting to) talk to us. Of course we have been broadcasting loud and clear out existence for the last 50 years so IF there is intelligent life out there and IF they receive our signals and IF we are not extinct by the time they get them and IF they can respond in time to contact us then we could get proof that there is other intelligent life it the universe.

One thing we do know is that on Earth, at least, if there is any chance of water than life will pop up; we find it everywhere. We haven’t found it on Mars or Venus yet, but they may be too hostile and we may not be looking in the right spot. There is a chance that we are unique, one of a kind by design (assuming the existence of God) or chance. If so then the universe is a poorer place. I happen to think that there are a lot of life forms out there, and maybe a few of them are intelligent. I don’t know how intelligent, we appear to be the only really intelligent species that developed on our planet. Our closest technological rivals are the apes and they haven’t even mastered fire yet.

According the SF author and astronomer Frank Drake in 1960 he came up with and equation and predicted 10 civilizations similar to our own at some point in our development currently in existence, but this was wild speculation.

According to the Drake Equation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_Equation
“The Drake equation (rarely also called the Green Bank equation or the Sagan equation) is a famous result in the speculative fields of exobiology, astrosociobiology and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

This equation was devised by Dr. Frank Drake (now Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz) in 1960, in an attempt to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy with which we might come in contact. The main purpose of the equation is to allow scientists to quantify the uncertainty of the factors which determine the number of such extraterrestrial civilizations.

Considerable disagreement on the values of most of these parameters exists, but the values used by Drake and his colleagues in 1961 were:
RL = 10/year (10 stars formed per year, on the average over the life of the galaxy)
FP = 0.5 (half of all stars formed will have planets)
NE = 2 (2 planets per star will be able to develop life)
FL= 1 (100% of the planets will develop life)
FI = 0.01 (1% of which will be intelligent life)
FC = 0.01 (1% of which will be able to communicate)
L = 10,000 years (which will last 10,000 years)
Drake's values give N = 10 × 0.5 × 2 × 1 × 0.01 × 0.01 × 10,000 = 10.”

“N is the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which we might hope to be able to communicate;

And

RS = the average rate of star formation in our galaxy
FP = the fraction of those stars that have planets
NE = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
FL = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point
FI = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life
FC = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.”
