In the news this week there was a report of a new earth 2.5 light years away. How do they know what kind of atmosphere it has, what the land is like and what the size of it's sun is from such a distance?

I ask this cause if we plan on going to that new planet, i'd like to figure out how long it would take to get there at our current speed abilities.
it doesn't seem like we can make it in a human lifetime.
I think we've got a better shot at sending a probe there to get some better pictures.

the red dwarf which is situated at 20 ly from us has a planetary system. the red dwarf has to undergo disaster changes like becoming a giant, novae, then nebula. these processes are going on around a white dwarf (it then changes into red dwarf.)
then how the planetary system can still stay on its system??

My 11-year-old daughter heard at school from other students that a giant meteor is predicted to hit the earth in the next 7 to 10 years, wiping out all life. They say it's been on the news. I've never heard of this before but she's obsessed with it now. Any astromer's out there who can confirm or deny this prediction?

Should we persue it? or leave it be? It doesn't rotate on it's axis, like the earth does, it always stays the same, like our moon does with relation to the earth. So one side would be too hot for life as we know it to survive, and the other too cold. but what about the 'side lines' maybe life could live there, since they detected possible H20 and gravity. My opinion is that we should send direct signals, like with the SETI program or something, and see if we get a response. I'd love to here other ideas thought, and other opinions. Thanks, Ron

Scientists say that for life to occur, Carbon, Hydrogen,Oxygen and Nitrogen are required. But maybe life can exist without these elements. If so, then a huge number of other planets can bear life too.

At the moment of the big bang, the escape velocity was more than the speed of light. No matter can go faster than the speed of light. (to accelerate one atom to a speed faster than light, you need an infinite amount of energy.) So, the big bang is impossible?

I'm getting a starter scope and one I looked at came with 25mm 12.5mm 10mm and 4mm celestron eyepieces which are of Kellner design. I hear a lot about the plossl design but not so much the kellner and was wondering if the plossl are better and if I had to choose one size to get in a plossl what the best one would be to start out with. was looking at a Orion Sirius Plossl 26mm which was a good price and their was a 12.5mm as well but where I don't have alot of money my choices need to be wise choices so I don't end up just getting frustrated.

if the life came by evolution as many people believe
why the earth's orbital speed....keeps at the right distance from the sun?
could life originate by chance?
if by explotion we are at the right distance from the sun it is a casuality? even the earth's tilt allows for seasonal changes as spring winter autumn and summer

what do you think?
why the earth's orbital speed....keeps at the right distance from the sun if we come by evolution?

They just found a similar, earth-like planet in a nearby solar system. It has 2 or 3 times our gravity, though. Could we even walk around or have normal bodily function there?
