I watched a video that said it would take 5 years traveling at the speed of light to reach the nearest star to our solar system. And 100,000 years at the speed of light to be able to see the milky way galaxy in its entirety. So does this mean that everything scientists look at in space are an image (reflection of light) from hundreds or thousands of years ago? By the way, when people say "light year" is this just a measure of the distance traveled by light in a year?

Earth is a planet and It has a surface, right? So does Mars!

Then why is Jupiter a planet when it doesn't have a surface as it's all gas?

Then they say that Pluto isn't a planet anymore - even though it has a surface and goes around the sun like all the others.

Can anyone explain this to me? And there are other planets with no surface!

What is the qualifications you need to become a planet?

I don't mean any disrespect, heck half my family is red necks. But i can just see it now " Ed and Jeds fuelin station" wouldn't that be awesome i mean 90% of the red necks have the pioneering spirit any way, plus with the colourful vernacular space travel would be a lot more fun.

it happened on my way to my car when i was getting off of work i heard somebody say what the hell is that pointing towards the sky, i looked up and it looked like a huge meteor going realy slow across the sky and i mean huge there was no flames or light coming from it, this mass was giving off a huge trail of smoke it didnt make any noise or sonic boom but it seemed to be really low or it might have just been the size of it and didnt break into pieces, it just went from one side of the horizon to the other side and the trail of smoke was all over the sky????? what the hell was it

I find it a little hard to believe that aliens would travel the vast light years from there world to here just to probe the rectum of some back water species like **** Sapiens, even if they were doing medical studies of us they world be more important procedures to perform like a viral toxicology screeing or something like that.

Comets appear to move very slowly, in relative terms to there distance from Earth. Falling stars appear to move lightning quick and yet are much farther away from us. Is there that much difference in speed? And if so, about how fast to each travel?

can some one tell me why the big bang isnt excepted by religions?! It has been proven right by people who have picked up the reminants of its sound. Dont tell me that that isnt possible because today we can pick up signals from radio stations that broadcasted back in the 1930's & 40's.....
it can be picked up also because of the infinante room out in space, so the sound has nothing to do but float around......
I will prove any other thoughts on the situation when i pick best answer, so those people out there who think they have a big & complex scientific theory, that really doesnt state anything, will be proved wrong. Also, people of the religious answers, dont deny that the Big Bang has been heard.
