it happened on my way to my car when i was getting off of work i heard somebody say what the hell is that pointing towards the sky, i looked up and it looked like a huge meteor going realy slow across the sky and i mean huge there was no flames or light coming from it, this mass was giving off a huge trail of smoke it didnt make any noise or sonic boom but it seemed to be really low or it might have just been the size of it and didnt break into pieces, it just went from one side of the horizon to the other side and the trail of smoke was all over the sky????? what the hell was it

Your description fits that of a "bolide", a large meteor that last a long time before
being totally burnt off
breaking apart
hitting the ground
bouncing back into space

sometimes, pieces seem to fall off (look like sparks) but not always.

If someone interviewed you for details, would you remember
exactly where you were,
which direction you were facing when first saw it (and its approximate altitude in the sky)
which direction it was travelling
where it was when you lost sight of it
the time (nearest minute might be enough)

If so, seek someone from a local astronomy club or even check the Web for amateur meteorite hunters in your area.

A meteorite wouldn't make a sonic boom. Only a vehicle that is slip stream is capable of making a boom and travelling above the sound barrier of around 750mph. I'd say it was a meteorite the aliens know we're still not ready to see them yet because we haven't developed warp technology!

You might have seen the Comet Mc Naught.

It's been the brightest comet in 32 years. It was all over the Internet news sites a couple of days ago. They said it would be very low in the horizon. I went out this early evening just after sunset to look for it, but it was to cloudy where I live.

Check it out. If you saw Comet Mc Naught consider your self one lucky individual.

It is only in the evening sky just around sunset for several minutes. Or the pre dawn sky before or during sunrise for several minutes.

It might have been a meteorite, but if its trajectory was at an angle to you, you would see it as going slower than you expect a meteorite to go. I can't think what else it would have been. Did you check the news in your area the next day to see if anyone else reported seeing it?

I have seen the space shuttle reenter at night and it looks exactly as you described. Check the NASA web page to see if a shuttle was landing about then.

If not a space shuttle, then some random satellite reentering. In other words, space junk.

My best suggestion is that might be a meteorite, burning up slowly and slowly, until there's a little peice of it left. And it would explain why you didn't hear the BOOM! I hope this answered your question...
