The eight planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

RESOLUTION 5A
The IAU therefore resolves that planets and other bodies in our Solar System be defined into three distinct categories:

(1) A planet1 is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

(2) A dwarf planet is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape2, (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

(3) All other objects3 orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as "Small Solar System Bodies".

A story hit the news in January 2006 stating that Lockheed Martin built a probe which NASA launched to Pluto. This probe was scheduled to reach Pluto in 2015. Do you think that researching the ex-planet is still beneficial since Pluto has been demoted?

Pluto the dog in joint cooperation with NASA and Pluto Dwarf Planet formally NKA Pluto the full fledged planet is preparing a legal defense to maintain its status as Planet not Dwarf. 1st thing being called a dwarf is insensitive and amounts to harassment 2ndly the Pluto has been a planet for 70 or more years now and based on technology at that time was considered a planet so Pluto is grand fathered into the solar system as a planet.

Further more world wide it is not cost effective to change Pluto into a dwarf due all text books being changed. There is a certain fixed dollar amount assigned to making all the book. Also lets think about the environmental cost of making Pluto a dwarf planet aside from the harassment it will destroy hundreds of thousand of trees to print new books. Reclassing Pluto is going to cause a world wide tree shortage. And you never thought what happened there could effect us here. Now with less trees we have less oxygen and more CO2. Deadly

Could somebody, please, explain why?

Technoly that satellite is going to research a planet, now since Pluto is no longer a planet, that satellite serves no purpose.

If the orbits of the two planets overlap and it's claimed that Pluto does not satisfy the new definition of a planet because it has not cleared Neptune from its orbit is it not also true that Neptune has not cleared Pluto from its orbit and therefore cannot be a planet. You cannot claim that the difference is that Neptune is already accepted as a planet whereas Pluto's status is the one in question because that is circular thinking and therefore unjustifiable.

The word 'planet' has an etymology older than modern astronomy, and though the definition is imprecise, that's ok. A small group of men in wigs and white robes does not own the word "planet", we the people do.

They should have invented their own word. I for one refuse to accept their authoritarian equivocation. Will you join the revolt and take back that which rightfully belongs to us all?

Yesterday it was decided in Prague that Pluton is not a planet as they found the new definition of the objects like that.
I am used to the names of all 9 planets of our solar system.
what do you think about it?
