We are down to eight as the IAU chose to decertify Pluto and designate three others as "dwarf planets", rather than bring the total up to 12

Pluto was officially demoted yesterday ( or the day before) and is now considered a "dwarf planet". There are 2 or 3 others that they may add to the "dwarf planet" category.
Our solar system is now back to 8.

There are now only 8 that fit the description. The problem has always been that there was no definition of what a planet was.

We have 9. The word 'planet' has an etymology older than modern astronomy, and though the definition is imprecise, that's ok. A small group of men in wigs and white robes does not own the word "planet", we the people do.
They should have invented their own word. I for one refuse to accept their authoritarian equivocation.
