Yeah....I knew it was false but a few friends insisted it was true! I just wanted the date so I could go out and point to it and say..oh look big as the moon eh!!

I never realised that it would be a southern hemisphere object though..thanks for that

It is very exaggerated, it would be nowhere as big as the moon even if it has big signs pointing it out...it may have been as bright as the moon but according to the BBC website Mars was very low in the sky in August so it might have only been possible to see it from the Southern Hemisphere.

Mars will be at its closest point in its orbit to us throughout October. Even my Tal 2M scope wont show loads of detail BUT, I am hoping to pickup Sytris Major and maybe Olympus Mons if there are no dust storms and WE get decent weather!! As for as big as the moon? Not a hope in hell

I think that it is meant to be visible on 27th September.
Visible, not enormous...most probably a red speck in the sky like last time we could see it a few years ago !

Hi Kaylee! I was told to look out on 22nd August. Forgot all about it. Probably a hoax as the other guys say. Nothing on the news about it. G. x

That was a hoax. Mars never, ever, looks as big as the Moon in our sky.

Firstly, the story was about the year 2005.
Secondly, it would appear the size of the moon when viewed through x75 binoculars, not with the naked eye.

Thats impossible. Mars could never be as big as the moon in our sky, unless God moved it closer.

whole lot exagerated, it was 02 or 03 that is was the closest, even then its just a red speck. makes a little difference whith a good telescope, but you still cant make out details
