Since the number of stars and planets is infinite then the chances of another life form existing is also infinite. The problem with meeting such is species is that life forms seem to come and go at a fairly fast rate. The human species has been around about 40,000 years which is about 1 second on the Universe's clock. It is possible that many other highly evolved species have arisen and then disappeared but that it was so long ago that we will not even recognize their artifacts.

No. All the Drake equation is doing is breaking the one big guess, how many planets have intelligent life on them, into a bunch of smaller guesses, like how many planets are there and how many have life and how much of that life is intelligent. It is all just guessing, not calculating.
