Why is that a thrown baseball, for example, have "energy" and "momentum", both of which are conserved? What's the point of having both of them?

Originally, Newton only proposed a "quantity of motion", which is momentum. HIs works did not include kinetic energy. Kinetic energy was theorized by others, such as Galileo, Leibniz, Young, and it was even pointed out by Playfair that it may not be necessarily conserved!

If we have momentum, what's energy, then?

in how many ways can you lay out 8 red balls and 5 white balls in a row, so that the left most ball is red, and no two white balls are next to each other?
by saying r= red and w=white i have
rw.....rw......rw......rw.......rw with 3 red balls left over. the answers say to put the remaining 3 red balls in the 8 positions available, so the answer is 8 choose 3. But i do not get this because i dont see that there are 8 possible positions.

thanks for your help

Asked this question before and got two crap answers. Mercury (76lbs in weight) are stored in flasks. I saw an OU program years back and they said a unit of Mercury was called a "Quink" and these "Quinks" went into a flask to fill it. I can't find anything on the net about it so does anyone know. I don't want it's chemical symbol or detail about pressure, just it's lowest unit name. Ta.

Jack and Jill ran a 200 meter race. Jill ran the race in 25 seconds and won by 5 meters; that is Jack had run only 195 meters when Jill crossed the finish line. They decide to race again, but this time Jill starts 5 meters behind the starting line. Assuming that both runners run at the same pace as before, who will win the second race and by how many seconds? (Hint: It's not a tie)
