We all know that Jan 1 (Gregorian) is New Years Day, but how was it determined which day of the earth's cycle would be Jan 1st? Why did they not choose the Winter Solstice which is 8 or 9 days earlier? Who made the determination of which day would be the first day of the year?

I have always wondered what would happen if the Hoover Dam failed or was destroyed. In this day and age of terrorism it is now a concern more than ever.

1. How much water would flood out and how far would the flood go?

2. What areas would be effected from the flooding?

3. How long would it take for the water to reach a point where it didn't pose a threat?

What would that do to the power in Arizona and Nevada and the water supplies to those States?

Thanks
