i am looking for an informative, well-written book on astronomy as a gift. the person is a "writer" and loves astronomy. he has already published a book with some information about astronomy within the book. the thing is, a friend of mine, who is extremely knowledgable on astronomy, read the book. he could hardly get through it based upon the extreme lack of understanding of basic astronomy and physics. so, with the person's interest in astronomy to begin with, i wanted to give them an informative book on astronomy. i don't want something that is like a student text book, since this is not appropriate. apparently, the person got much knowledge from the picture books.... hummm.....

any good suggestions?

(i would ask my well-schooled friend, but they are on a trip)

Hypothetically speaking, what kind of disastrous impact would it have on Earth, if our moon was to fall out of Earth's gravitational pull? Either slowly or all at once.

My theory is that if we can harness the power of gravity, (gravitational fields), we could create a propulsion system that could speed to 186,000 miles per second or more.

What is math? I've got a BS in it and still have a hard time answering that question. I think in some way it is inexorably linked with humans or something like that. I guess this is more of a philosophy question.

Can anyone tell me why sphingomyelin is one of the main phospholipid components of animal plasma membranes but is not found in the membranes of mitochondria or chloroplasts.

I understand that the lipid content of mitochondria and chloroplasts is much lower than the lipid content of the plasma membrane but I can't find a reason as to why the lipid that is present does not include sphingomyelin.

Is there a functional difference between sphingomyelin and other phospholipids (ie phosphoglycerides)??

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I heard a story recently that on the day the Challenger sopace shuttle exploded after launch on 1-28-86, that the Russians had a day earlier launched a Soyuz capsule containing three pre-teen cosmonauts(10, 12 and 14 years old, two males and a female) as part of a top-secret project to determine if youngsters could survive a space trip of a week or more...the results were classified to this day, and the Russian space agency also denies this event even took place at all!!!...

However, I know that this happened, and that the world media were forbidden to report on it...

My question: DID this event(the Russian kids in space) really happen?

If there is no friction to slow an object, why not put huge rockets on it with a huge radio transmitter, shoot it off somewhere in space and see what happens? Or what if we merged the moon with the earth? like a planet with a huge tumor? would it ruin earth or would it become part of it?
