All of these bright people who have answered, "Thomas Edison!" are wrong. The first man who made an incandescent light bulb was Sir Humphry Davy, an English physician, in 1801, a full 78 years before Edison "perfected" the incandescent bulb. Edison is credited for having made incandescent electric bulb practical, but he did not invent it.
Some of the advantages are: 1) does not involve a flame or combustible fuels, 2) is comparatively safer than electric arc-lamps, 3) does not require frequent maintenance or refueling, 4) operation is instant
