Hey, I study Astronomy at GCSE level and have recently studied black holes. I have, of course, come across the normal theory of what a 'black hole' is - a star which has died and is so dense, and has such a strong gravitational force, that light simply cannot escape from it. But, after reading an Astronomy textbook written by Patrick Moore, I have come across another, slightly different theory for it.

It states that when a star (with a mass 8 times larger than that of our own Sun) dies, it collapses, extremely violently, and keeps doing so until the rate of its collapse exceeds the speed of light - thus being faster than light itself and not alowing any to escape. The nearest black hole similar to this is said to be Cygnus X-1, 6500 light-years from the Solar System.

I cannot find any other reference to this theory. Are black holes caused by strong gravity or bloody high speeds? Or have I just mis-interpreted the text?

A heavy armchair is currently on a black tile on the floor. You want to move it so it is on the adjacent white tile, facing the same way. It is so heavy that you can only move it by swiveling it by 90 degrees around one of its corners. Is it possible to make the move?

I know sometimes meiosis can occur in error, i.e. some cells are left with an extra chromosome which can lead to disorders such as down syndrome. Prior to meiosis, however, animal cells undergo mitosis and cytokinesis. Mitosis occurs when the nucleus splits, and cytokinesis occurs when the cytoplasm, or essentially the rest of the cell splits. It appears to be generally accepted that the 2 occur in sync. But I wonder if mitosis could just occur without cytokinesis occuring? Like could the nucleus just spit into 2 (mitosis), but the cytoplasm still remain intact, resulting in a single cell with 2 nuclei? And if so what would be the results of such an occurence?
